My yankee son in law wants to deer hunt with me here in Tennessee......That's a good thing.......however, Tennessee requires anyone born after 1 Jan 1969 to have a hunter safety course...........He tells me he took a course up there in NY but has lost the certificate...........Can one of you fine fellows give me a link to where he can get a replacement please?

Tell you what.......he's a pretty good Son in law......I'll try to get my daughter to keep him if yall try to keep Hillary......just need to work on his pronunciation......fair enough?

If Albany has on file that he purchased a license after the correct date, they will use that as proff that he has taken the course ans issue him a replacement certificate.  If he needs it quickly, they can fax a copy on a certified letterhead.

They did it for me up here in AK when I needed my bowhunter ed. cert.

Contact the state Game and Fish folks where he got the certificate. They should be able to issue a duplicate with no problem but will likely cost a few bucks. A fellow who is of an age to need one sure needs to pay more attention to holding on to it than that. Old farts like me don't need them anywhere in the US but I'd bet I could lay my hands on mine if I really needed to.

A co-worker of mine has been hunting in N.Y. since the early 70's.
He goes elk hunting in Colorado and they would not accept his license as proof of having taken a hunters safety class.  N.Y. told him they could only re-issue certificates back to 1980.  He ended up having to take a one day crash course hunters safety class in Colorado for that year's hunt and the following fall he had to take the N.Y. class if he wanted to continue hunting in Co.

Thanks guys.......I've never been checked deer hunting....but have a few times rabbit hunting over dogs........It's always been when hunting close to a road where the game warden could see us.......

As far as a young fellow keeping anything.........Well, I'm just glad he's kept a job for awhile and been able to feed the grandkids.........My stepson, who I raised as my own, came up a few years ago and couldn't find his either........He's down in South Florida and only hunts when he comes up here......Either way, I've got his card in my file cabinet.........

Which brings up another thing that chaps me right between the legs........Stepson called yesterday from Ft. Lauderdale........Doesn't have lights.....asked me to send him a Coleman lantern......Says everthings sold out in Broward county...........Now, why, after 4 or 5 days of watching a Hurricane brew, and reports of it coming your way, wouldn't you be better prepared if your going to stay put and ride it out?  He was raised in the woods and knows better............Anyway, bought him a battery powered rechargable coleman lantern that will charge via AC or DC....., a few candles, and his mom filled the rest of the box with peanut butter, vienna weiners, sardines, and crackers..........Does a fellow ever get a kid raised?

as an instructor who hands those certificates out, I can say Albany only keeps records for 10 years. An instructor only has to keep them for a year. So, if it has been longer than 10 years since he took the course, he has no chance of getting a replacement one. His best bet would be to go back ot the instructor who gave it to him and see if he still has a record, but, we are still limited to 10 years.

You been given plenty of advice here, but some of it is not correct.  As the Region 4 Master Gun Instructor, let me set you on the right course.
First, I would ask you to call 1-888-HUNT ED2 (state office for sportsman ed).  They can look up the person's name, and tell you whether, or not they have his record on file (several years ago, they had all records converted to the computer system going back to 1981.  Their intent was to back even further).  They will inform you how to receive a duplicate certificate, if he is in the system.

If he is NOT in the system, there is no way to get around retaking the course.  Frankly, with the changes to the Sportsman Ed Courses, I would like to ask that he consider retaking the course anyway.  It will be time well spent for him, as he will be learning things that were not included in the first course he took.

The State's DEC website is:  www.dec.state.ny.us

I am in contact with both the main office and the region 4 office on a regular basis.  PM me if you need more help.  Good Luck, and good hunting.  Joe
