Bed to Barrel Ratio
« on: October 14, 2005, 01:08:27 PM »
Hello All,

I was just wondering if there is actually a standard when making a mortar bed. Most of the beds I have seen, seem to have a 2 to 1 (bed to barrel) ratio. The 2 to 1 seems to be a good scale ratio but, I was wondering if there is a standard.
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

I don't know of a 'standard' per se, but most seem to have the trunion about in the middle - to keep from flipping over.  Most seem to be at 45 degrees elevation.

Keeping them from tipping over is a major concern.  Try to keep the bore axis at minimum elevation within the footprint of the mount.

The other issue is balance when carrying, which tends to be the opposite of the firing requirement.  If you are making a freelance mount, you could set it up so that the barrel was angled one way for carrying and the opposite way for firing by flipping the barrel on the trunnion.
