Zachary and others an unfair question

In a ss/syn 300wsm rifle which would you choose and why? sako, kimber or tikka. One choice only.Cost not an issue.

I've never handled a sako. But  aren't they the same as a tikka but with a metal trigger guard and bolt shroud? If so i'd say sako if not i'd say tikka. They've got the smoothest action i've ever seen in a rifle. The kimbers i've played with were nice but not as smooth and slick as the tikka.

SAKO and TIKKA are both owned by Baretta.

I have had several Sakos (still have 1)and have 1 of the pre-T3 Tikkas.  They may be owned by the same Parent company but they are not the same.  I would go with the Sako over the T3.

Sorry for the late reply, but I am currently traveling on business. :grin:

I own all three, and all three are in Stainless/Synthetic configuration.

All three are excellent.  My favorite, for the money, is Tikka.  However, I would not recommend the Tikka in a WSM cartridge because they loose a lot of velocity (something to do with the throat).

As for the Kimber and the Sako, I own a Kimber Montana in .300WSM and it shoots 1 inch groups and less at 100 yards with Nosler Partitions (avg. about .75"), and about 1" avg with the Barnes TSX.  Fit and finish on the Kimber is EXCELLENT.  Kimber also has excellent customer service - perhaps second to none.  The only thing that I don't personally like about the Kimber is that the bolt can make some noise unless you have a round in the magazine.  Kimber says that previous models were coined as "tight" and now the bolt works much more smoothly.  I guess it's just personal preference.  Still, the Kimber is great!

Now, as for the Sako.  Another excellent choice.  I own a couple and love them to death.  Think of Sakos as double the quality components (all stainless steel) for double the money ($1,000 for Sakos, $500 for Tikkas - give or take).  The Sakos and Tikkas have the same barrels, and both are shooters.  I am not aware, however, if Sakos also have the long throat like the Tikkas, and thus the lower velocity.

When the decision is to be made between Sako and Kimber, the question is this....do you want a light weight gun?  If yes, then get the Kimber.  If it doesn't matter, then get the Sako.  I fully intend to use my Kimber for any hunt that involves a lot of walking - especially in the mountains and other higher elevations where every ounce of weight matters.

I thought a long throat made for higher muzzle velocities.  Isn't that why Weatherby rifles have more "freebore" than other manufacturers?  Or am I just getting my terminology mixed up?

I can't answer for the Weatherbys, but the Tikkas, at least in the WSMs, do have long thoats.  From what I have been told, the Tikka WSMs loose about 200fps because of their longer throats.  Not only have I read this in one of the magazines (it was a comparison between a Savage and a Tikka, and the Tikka in .270WSM was 200fps slower than the Savage model), but also members with chronys have also confirmed this.

If anyone out there can help me out....please jump in.
