Check out the 1943 1911A1 on Auction Arms that's over $5100! #3929986. What's up with this gun?

Well, if they're suckers, there sure are a lot of them bidding on it. There has got to be something very special about that .45.

I guess there must be a lot of collectors out there.  One interesting thing I heard on that PBS antique roadshow was that the collector gun market is rife with fraud.  There's such a slight difference between guns worth practically nothing and worth a huge amount that sometimes it just comes down to a slight marking or range of serial numbers.   Some of the examples were dramatic, with values differing by as much as three orders of magnitude.

Lo and behold! That 45 is one of the fraudulent ones. A 1911 from World War II did not originally have micro adjustable sights or an elevated front  target sight.  This gun was probably just stolen from the US by a GI and then accurized for target shooting. Judging by the sights, the work looks like it was probably done in the 1960s.  $5100!?! There is a sucker born every minute.  With alterations like that, it shouldn't be worth much to a collector unless, perhaps, it belonged to John Wayne, a popular U.S. President, or somebody of similar status.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Questor:  you are absolutely correct.  That particular pistol sounds like a fraudulent setup and the one who is selling it is either a huckster or way in over his head/out of his league.  Actually, unless someone's WWII GI 45 was owned/carried/used by an Audie Murphy or someone like that, it is just another WWII GI 45 and definately not worth more anywhere near the asking price.

Just my 2 cents worth.  Mikey.

Cheap 45's

I agree with Questors post on the cheap 45's.  About a year and a half ago I picked up a 45 Govt. Model with the serial number being 7XXXXX.  We looked it up and it was made in 1942.  This gun had Triangle sights on it and a high front sight.  Triangle sights were supposedly used in the National Matches in the 50's according to D. Clark who posts on this site.  I sure didn't pony up any 5 grand for this piece.  More like $400.00.  The gun shoots well and a 73 year old man just brought it into the local shop and said he really didn't need it anymore.  Suspicion was that he stuffed it in a duffle bag at the end of WW II and then it had some other work done to it.  Once you modify them at all the value goes way down as they aren't collectors pieces anymore.  Mikey is still after mine but he hasn't caught me yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :)

Boy I wish that was a real price.

I have a 1945 colt with the correct sights.
It is stamped: Property US gov.
It is also stamped: Released British gov. 1952
Seemingly this gun was issued to our allies and then eventually released.
This gun is original except grips (genuine stag horn).

Local gun clerk said it was worth $700 with original grips (did not know if British gov stamp would help or hurt value).

Long way from $5,000!

Good shooting,

Well, I'll be... It's on there again! #7691734. This is getting goofy - at least it's starting at a decent price with no reserve. I sure would like to know how it got so high before - maybe a little shill bidding going on?
