fluted barrels pros-cons?
« on: September 19, 2005, 12:37:22 AM »
I'm thinking about getting a sako finnlight. Don't really like the looks of the fluted barrel, but in 7mag it's well over a pound lighter than the model 75 ss/syn. So what are the pro's and con's of the fluted barrel? being their lighter, is barrel life going to be shorter?

Barrel life should not be affected. The main purpose of the fluting is to make the rifle lighter. There is a slight cooling benefit due to the greater surface area, but it is not significant. Get which ever feels best to you.

Like you, I don't like the look. I will stick to the unfluted barrels.  :D

Fluted barrels are lighter and the greater surface area allows them to coll quicker. in a varmit rifle this may be a significant factor, in a 7mmMag I wouldn't think it would matter. The main benefit is the fluted barrels are stiffer than a normal barrl of like weight.  This means accuracy should be a bit better, all else being the same.. Still not a major factor to me...

I am a fan of fluted barrels, although they are not truly necessary on hunting rifles (Big game that is.)  Now, if you are shooting about 25 shots on varmints, then a fluted barrel helps.

 I have a fluted barrel on my tack driving 22-250.  That said, I have several other guns that are also tack drivers that don't have a fluted barrel.  I can't see any advantage to them, but have no argument against them either.  In my opinion, it just gets down your personal likes, dislikes. :D
