Didn't Gander Mtn hear yet?
« on: September 08, 2005, 12:21:22 PM »
I just opened the sale flyer that came today. Apparently they didn't hear the rifle bill passed.  :-D  Looks like they have 8 slugguns and a slew of muzzleloaders on sale, but not one centerfire rifle.

Go figure

Sale ? The price on rifles will probably go up with the Bill being passed .   Shotguns are accurate to 100 yards+ . ML's beyond
150 yards .

With all this hullabaloo about the rifle season being passed I might just stick to my slug guns and mls...Heck, I don't have any shots beyond 75-100 yards anyway.  A friend of mine offered to let me use a 257 Roberts that he acquired for free because he uses his Encore ML...Not sure about that one yet...

BTW, I'm sure Gander had that sales flyer ready to go a month ago and at that time the rifle bill was not a sure thing...

Your probrably right about the sale flyer.

As far as rifle goes this year I may also pass as I have a whole bunch of Lightfields to put though my 1187, and I also enjoy hunting with my muzzleloader too. Next year it might be a different story.

There are going to be different regulations in the two areas that I hunt this year.  Most of my hunting will be in Erie County(slug guns) with another portion being done in Allegany County(rifles) so I will still have use for those slugs that I have at home...I would love to move up to a rifle for Allegany County...Only time will tell if I can work the logistics out.

Outdoor writers won't publish rifle bill article!!
« Reply #5 on: September 18, 2005, 05:10:56 PM »
I sent Joe Ognibene ( outdoor editor for NF gazette) and Bill Hilts Jr. ( Niagara County Tourism and outdoor writer) both an e mail asking why no article had been in any of the papers concerning the passing of this Bill. I never heard back from Ognibene ( never thought I would anyway) but Hilts got back saying he did an article but it didn't get published in the paper. I think what it boils down to with these writers is if THEY are not in favor of something then they take it upon themselves to think no one else is either. I do remember when Hilts and Ognibene were bad mouthing the NYS Bowhunters when they wanted to pass the crossbow Bill and the bowhunters were against it.

Ognibene and Hilts Jr. are the two reasons I won't buy a Sunday Gazette.

Is there still a Sunday Niagara Gazette?     My parents used to have that paper delivered but they switched to the Buffalo News on Sundays...I don't recall a big article in the Buffalo News regarding the rifle bill either.  I could have missed it though.  My wife and I only receive the Sunday Buffalo News...

I don't think the Buff News had an article either!!! I'll 2nd that on the Courier Express! That was the last of the good papers.Seeing now Gannett owns all of our local papers the only thing I use them for now after spending 2 minutes reading them is to start a campfire at camp!

The Buffalo News did indeed have an article telling about the rifle bill being passed.  If I recall correctly, it was on a Thursday, and not in the regular "Sporting column", so it may have been missed.  I was out of town but my Dad cut it out for me.

The bill excluded many WNY counties.

In any event, for Aleg. county, with the terain and trees there, why would anyone want a rifle anyway?  My rifled 12 ga. bbl will do much better!

For the most part I will agree with you...But, a friend of mine owns 90 acres in Scio and he has a power line right of way running across his property...He has shots up and down that right of way that a 12GA can only dream of.  He also has a large open field that is about 150 yards long and 100 yards wide...Nice place to set up a blind and sit it out with a scoped rifle...The rest of his property is a dream for a slug gun...All hard woods with a few stands of pines...Not too many shots over 50-75 yards in the woods...Until this season I have hunted it with a H&R Ultra Slugger 12GA...I will still take that gun but a rifle may be going down to the Southern Tier too...
