Is it possible and what would it take to convert a 25-06 to a Roberts?
What barrel manufacturer would you suggest?
My old Roberts needs to be retired.

Thanks for your comments. I am just a hunter, not a gunsmith so keep it simple for me.

:shock: Why would you want to convert a 25-06 to a .257 Roberts? You already have a better caliber, why not use it?

Now, depending on the brand of barrel you use, that could range from $150. (Adman and Bennet) to $500 dollars for a better (?) brand name. For a gunsmith to remove and replace, head space and re-blue, you can expect another $150-250. Depending on what you go with, you could have 5-6 hundred tied up in the conversion. Look around, you can find a replacement rifle for less.

Ruger currently makes a BOB. It might be possible to have a 25-06 rechambered to 257 Roberts, but I don't know.

Add to what 'MH WASH' and 'rockbilly' had to say you are also going to end up with a sloppy action due to the .25-06's added length. Considering the added costs, why not go out and purchase a Ruger M77 in .257 Roberts? Lawdog

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was not the best of ideas, but wondered what it would take.

First, I like new projects. Part of the enjoyment I take from hunting now is tuning a new rig and using it the next fall in the field.

Second, I have hunted both with a 760 Bob and a Ruger #1 25-06. This new gun would be my wife and small kid's gun. Our small TX whitetails and the 25 calibers are excellent matches. The approx. 25% reduction in recoil is a key reason I like the Roberts. They are not long range hunters (yet).

Third, I thought I might get a very cheap accurate action and stock ($250) with a great barrel and have a one of a kind.

I like Rugers, but I kind of wanted something else. I have a Swift 77V, Red Label and a couple of Single Actions revolvers. All very old!

Well I kinda like that idea, since the Stevens 200 is a Savage in disguise, all you need is a barrel. a barrel nut wrench, a split hardwood block with the appropriate hole, a vise, and a set of headspace gauges. Savage Shooter's has an article on how to go about it, and links to the appropriate components. :wink: The .257 Roberts is better off in a long action, you don't have to seat the heavier bullets so deep.

I'd try to buy one chambered for a cartridge based on the *x57 case, if they have one, just so there's no feeding problems.
