bullets, bullets, where to buy cheap bullets ?
« on: October 18, 2005, 04:04:41 PM »
Hey guys, I have a question here about 30-06 ammunition, I do alot of shooting with 30-06 and to be honest, visiting my friendly walmart once every couple weeks to buying couple of boxes of 180 grain remington rounds and that is getting kinda hurtful for my walet lol (about 11.99 per box, so 3 boxes = almost 40$)

I have been doing some research about finding cheaper ammo primary for doing some rifle-range shooting..... I went to www.cabelas.com and found a box of 400 bullets (of 150 grain) for 99.99$ (thats pretty darn cheap, 25 cents per shot, can't beat that)

My question is, are those bullets good for your gun, I mean they seem to be pretty cheap quality, I use remington 7400 and my friend uses his 7600, and we wanted to buy a box and split it in half.........
Would those bullets hurt our guns ? are they 'ok' for hunting ?

and also, do you guys know any places / websites that also sells ammo for 30-06 cheap ?

thanx

Sounds like you guys need to learn how to reload. If you don't want to do that, and still want to shoot shoot cheap ammo, buy surplus Mil ammo. Just stay away from steel jacketed bullets, steel cases if the Ruskies are selling any, and corrosive primers, unless you are willing to learn how to clean for them.

What Ramrod said..

As to the Cabela’s ammo…

The product I see is newly manufactured ammo in brass cases and uses FMJ bullets.  These should be fine in your gun but I would definitely not use them for hunting anything other than varmints.  Shooting a deer with an FMJ bullet is an excellent way to would a deer that will run off and never get recovered.

The cheapest ammo I see is normally at the gun shows.  There is an added advantage that you do not have to pay shipping.

Some online stores to look at.com
www.midsouthshooterssupply.com  <(Graybeard sponsor)
www.cheaperthandirt.com
www.sportsmansguide.com
www.midwayusa.com

I have used all of these stores with great success.
The others have given you good advice about the ammo.
The military surplus ammo should be fine, stay away from corrosive primers. Don't use any solids (full metal jackets) for hunting they are for punching holes in paper. Always use hollow points or soft point HUNTING bullets for deer, those Rem. corlokts are a good deer bullet.

Go to Walmart. It's $11.37 per box of either Winchester or Remington Core Lokt  in either 150 or 180 grain ammunition.

nasem,
As someone else has already said.....Remington 30-06 psp CoreLokts in 150gr., 165gr., and 220gr. loads for 30-06.  Nothing better for whitetails.  Just check on-line prices @ Cheaper than Dirt, Midway, MidSouth, and Cabela's.
PS.......Don't forget to check on shipping costs too.  That's where they stick it to ya!!!!
Now, when you get sick of buying over the counter factory ammo, talk to us about handloading..............

That looks a good deal to me. They will be great for target shooting but remember this is cheap ammo from overseas so don't expect match grade accuracy. It will go bang and put holes in the paper, help your shooting form, get you used to your weapon and break in your barrel. It would probably work ok for hunting if your lucky and it shoots really good in your rifle. However, how about using this stuff just for plinking at the range and then just before hunting season you can readjust your scope if nessesary for the Remington core lokts these would probably make a much better hunting bullet. IMHO

I've used steel cased ammo, in both my 223 and my SKS=7.62x39, and My Mosin's with some decent results and the Mosins giving me the better of them. It's not the best, most precise consistant ammo, and I don't believe it ever claimed to be.  Brass is better, just all around.
Still I would order some to at least try out and just plink with. Like marylandeer said if nothing else helping practice form and have fun with. I've tried the Silver/Brown Bear and Wolf ammo and don't see much difference. Many are against steel cased ammo and won't touch the stuff, but I like to shoot. If my ammo doesn't hurt my rifle, then I'll shoot it.
Sense you guys are using a pump and auto louder I guess I should mention that there has been some debate about steel cased ammo wearing the inside of the chamber out. Like in the case of an SKS or AK. But I can't speak from experiance about that in particular. All I can say is that I have had a lot of fun with steel cased ammo for only pennys and nickels a shot.
Hunting with it? I suppose you could use it in a spot, but I would opt for better ammo dedicated for hunting, and the -06 has a TON of great factory loads at a fair price. Federal, Hornady, Winchester, Remington, take your pick.
