Charles Daly .458 Win mag
« on: March 11, 2006, 10:58:15 AM »
Has anyone had any experience or have any knowledge of the quality aspects of this rifle? I believe they are made by Zastava Arms and are imported by Charles Daly. They appear to be based on the Mauser 98 actions. Does anyone know if the .458 Win mag. action length in these rifles could accommodate a conversion to the .458 Lott? Case length would be approximately .300 longer and with 500-600 grain bullets would there be a problem with feeding/loading?
I enjoy the expertise and knowledge of this forums' members. Seems as though there is always someone here who has "been there-done that"!!

Hello:

From what I've been able to find out, I think that Zastava is no longer handled by Charles Daly, matter of fact if you go to the Charles Daly site you'll see that all M98 mausers are discontinued or no longer carried.  BUT if you surf over to remington country and call up the new remington 798 or 799, AKA M98 Mauser and Mini Mauser respectively.   Zastava is now selling barreled actions to Remington and the Remington folks are putting Laminated hardwood stocks on them.  The weapons have very excellent  quality reputations and the CRF should do nothing but enhance the feeding.  The very best thing about this is the MSRP of these pieces.   Extremely reasonable for 375 & 458 Winchester Magnums to say nothing of the fact that we still have a good source for modern M98 Mausers.  If it doesn't show.....I'm pretty excited :-D

Take Care

I know a few guys who have had their .458's bored out to lotts without a problem.  Just measure the magazine box (or look it up if you cant get your hands on one right now, or call them) to make sure the cartridge will fit.
