I finally made my mind up on which one to get...heck I just bought one of each. The 742 in 30-06 and the 7600 in 270. I should say repurchased the 7600. I traded it in on a bolt didn't like it (Mod. 70) and regretted it the first time I shot the bolt. By good fortune it was still in the shop, traded the bolt back and my ole 270 is now my new 270. I was shooting 1-11/4" groups with this rifle and am glad to have it back. this puppy will stay in my gun case and be passed on to one of my baby boys. One's 28 my baby is 26 and 6'7". I have yet to fire the 742 and will use for my Elk rifle or my Oryx rifle if and when I can draw out here in NM. Has anyone had experience with the 742?

My Dad uses a 742 in .30-06. He's used factory Remington Core-Lokts, 180 grain forever. He's killed a lot of deer with it...

I have a 742 in 30-06. I have killed a couple nice hogs (175 and 200) with it using Remington Core-Lokt 165's.

I owned a Remington 742 over 20 years ago. It was accurate and pointed well. I used it for some extensive target shooting and it broke. Remington fixed it but informed me that these rifles are not designed for lots of shooting. I had purchased it used and probably put about 3,000 rounds through it before it broke. If I can locate it, there was an excellent report on the differences between the 740, 742 and 7400 series of rifles about a year ago. Included in the treatise was the mechanical reason for the rifle not being able to take a lot of shooting. Not a problem for the 100 rounds a year shooter.
