The annual long range matches for artillery hosted by Loomis' Battery on the Michigan National Guard base in Grayling Michigan will be held Saturday and Sunday this weekend (7/23-24). All artillery using full military loads, rifled at 1000 yd, smoothbore at 5-600 yd. Seige mortars at 900 yards (the earth MOVES!!!) Coehorns at 200(?) Free for spectators. Come on out and see why SIZE DOES MATTER!(on the target range, at least...)

Note: if traveling from the south, consider alternate routing avoiding I-75
I understand there is major construction on long stretches of it. M-127 is supposed to be a good alternative. Maybe check Mich. DOT website.

I can't go play either Tim. I just bought a farm in Madison Co. and have to much to do. Found a place to lay out a 500 yard range already. <grin> Property twice that long but starts uphill after 500  =(

I had an opportunity to check out the first 4 hours of this yearÂ’s Camp Grayling Day 1. The crowds were large, the weather was great and the shooting was impressive to say the least. Smooth bore cannons fired at 500 yard targets consisting of six 55-gallon barrels stacked 2 wide and 3 high (completely demolished at the end of the match) while the rifled guns shot at 4Â’ x 6Â’ targets a 1000 yards distant. The number 3 position on the first field gun relay scored multiple hits on their 1000 yard target. Nearly a dozen Coehorns took aim at a flag pole 200 yards away while the siege mortars put on a great show with balls easily visible during their nearly 14 second flights.

I wonder what a 55 gallon drum full of water would look like when hit with a 3" round?

 Wish I had know you were going to be there, we could have met.

 Saturday was a great day for shooting.

 The crew which took out all the barrels were shooting an 1838 smoothbore 12lb. tube. (I think they shot 11 hit of 15)(Grimmes Battery?)

  The 3rd Md. (from Va.) won the 1000 yd rifle match on Saturday with 11 hits on a 4'x6' target.

   The best shooting was done after a terrible storm on Sunday morn.
5 hits were made on a 2'x3' newspaper @ 1000 yrds. with 9 out of 10 on the 4'x6'.  They were from PA.

   One crew came in from Co.

   Some very fine shooting.

   (Please excuse any mistake in the above as it is from memory and it ain't what I thought it once was.)
