range time

I got out today to the range with a buddy. Temp was about 8 degrees with a stiff Northeast wind.  Anyway I took my new encore24 inch  7-08.  It is blued with the walnut stock. I have wanted one of these for a while, and finally it is here. Anyway, I put  a weaver base and 4x4 rings on a bushnell sportsman 3x9x40 on it. Hand loads of sierra game king 140 grain btsp. Pushed them with IMR 4895  42.6 grains. Winchester brass and cci primers.  The first three shots were covered with a quarter at 50 yards. 3 inches to the right. Made an adjustment and shot 3 more in the bull.  Went to 100 yards and group went to 2 inches 5 shots. That was about all I did because of the weather and wind. I am by far very happy so far. Looking forward to putting the 50 cal barrel on and seeing what I can do with it.

I'm shooting a 24" 7-08 as well and am starting to shoot thumbtacks at 50 yards.  My goal is to live up to my Grandpa's standards:

"Boy, when I was your age, I could light a match with my open sighted 30-30 at 50 yards..."

I'm SURE this was one of those "both eyes closed, in a hurricane and bare-footed" type stories       I would still like to try it though.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!
