Delaware Hunters Handgun hunting for Deer
« on: April 29, 2005, 09:36:53 AM »
Attention Delaware: Call Your Senator!

On Tuesday, May 3, the Senate will be considering Senate Bill 46, which would permit the hunting of deer with sporting handguns. This bill will open up many more opportunities by effectively managing the large deer population in Delaware. It is critical that your State Senator hears from you on this issue. Please call your Senator before Tuesday at (302) 744-4286, and respectfully urge them to support SB 46, the Handgun Hunting bill. Please be sure to make this important call!

We had this vote come up several years ago and the Game and fish and the State purposed certain handguns, but we had a group call the Delmarva Sportsman pipe in and say we want all handguns or nothing and we got NO handgun hunting. I hope they keep there mouths shut this time around. I call the President of the club and voice my concern about there all or none. I also told them we need to get our foot in the door and then we push for more, but until we have a start we have nothing.

It would be great to see another state allow handguns for deer. I think both sides will have to compromise. I know that Delaware is a compact state and that something to what some southern New Hampshire towns have as far as a restriction would be the way to do it. Straight walled cases limited to 357, 10mm, 41 mag,44 mag,45 Colt and 480 Ruger.

Last season I hunted in southern New Hampshire with a 10" 44 mag TC. It was really neat to hunt even though I didn't get one.

bigbore442001, a lot of us in Delaware would love to hunt with any handgun. I am more than satisfied with Straight walled cases limited to 357, 10mm, 41 mag,44 mag,45 Colt and 480 Ruger.

One big concern comes from the Game And Fish agents. They are opposed to it. They think they are in more danger with people with handguns. I thought it was a weak argument, a 12 gauge slug is more dangerous then a handgun round and we use slug guns here in Delaware.

I believe that the DNR of your state like others are worried about PR rather than the actual firearm used.

Look at it this way. If you study the ballistics of a 12 guage sabot slug, sabotted muzzeloader and those of a 44 magnum, you'll see that they are all short ranged firearms.

I hunt in Massachusetts which prohibits rifles and handguns for deer. But I am allowed to hunt with my 50 inline. I figure I am shooting 300  grain sabotted slugs at 1800 fps with 150 grains of H777. I looked at the ballistics and it is in the same catagory as a 45-70 rifle. Yet, I cannot shoot deer in my state with a straight walled pistol round like a 44 magnum TC. It is all PR. Some don't want to alarm the public thinking it is OK to hunt with a handgun.

Best of luck,
Maybe I'll have to buy an out of state next year.
Del is a lot shorter drive from where I am in PA than anywhere in state where I can use a handgun.

I am just out side of Dover about a little over an hour from PHL Airport.

Found out yesterday the handgun bill was passed, put they added a stipulation for non -residents. We will see what goes on now. It is up to the Game and fish department now and all the clowns there don't want handguns for hunting. They say they don't want to walk up to people with handguns in the field. Kind of stupid if you ask me, a shotgun slug will make a big hole as well and probably cause more damage.  :?

I've heard that they want to make the handgun season the 2nd and third week of Jan for starters. If the Gov. signs the bill which I think she will.

I have the infomation for the gun:  357 magnum to .50 caliber.  Straight-walled cartridges only. Barrel length from 5.75 to 12.5 inches.  Revolver
or single shot only.  Carried exposed on the outside of clothing. I heard that the bill is in the house [Rep] :D

How fast do the 600gr and 700gr bullets for the 500 go? The most I would try with these 500 gr bullets I shoot is 1419 fps.  :D
Thanks

jro45, you can get about 900 to 1100 fps from the 700 gr. Which is a lot for a 700 gr. bullet from a handgun.

Also the Governor  indicated she would sign the handgun bill, and you are correct about a 7 day season in January only. But a least we will have our foot in the door.  :D

900 to 1100 is pretty fast for a 700gr bullet. These 500gr bullets I shoot feel about the same as the 400 gr bullets. Not bad at all.

I guess I'll get my 500 sighted in with those 270gr bullets at 150 yds for the deer season probably get that done this fall. I got 4lbs of W296 for the 500. Is that a dirty powder like H110?

I am going to go with some the Barnes X 275gr. gor deer here in the 500 MAG. I will also try some of those 200 gr. Barnes in my 454 Casull, the ones made for the 460.  I use a lot of w296 and it is just as dirty as the H110. I also use Lil-gun and it is a little cleaner.

For my Bear hunt coming up in October, I am going to either use the 370 gr. or try the 575 gr. I have not made up my mind yet, they both shoot good in my 500 MAG's.

Get your foot in the door.  When I moved out to IL five years ago all we had  was a three day handgun season in mid January (with very limited acceptable cartridges).

Now we can use our handguns in the regular firearms season and they have eased up on the cartridge restrictions a bit.

At least my 357 Max is now legal.
