Winchester M70 vs. Kimber Montana
« on: April 24, 2005, 11:21:35 AM »
I saw one of the Winchester M70 Classic Ultimate Shadow's at a sporting goods store today.  I went to look at the Kimber Montana and this gun caught my eye.  Those of you that have had the opportunity to shoot it, what do you think?

Here is the link:

I was going to purchase the Kimber 84M Montana in 7mm-08 in the next couple months.  How would the two compare?  I would probably be going with 7mm WSM if I got the Winchester - How do ballistics and accuracy of this cartridge compare with 7mm-08?  Will be used for whitetail hunting

Thanks!!!   :D

I have a Kimber 84 M in 308 and a Super Shadow in 7mm WSM. I think the Kimber is the best carry rifle on the market. They are both very accurate rifles. The Kimber also has the best trigger I have found outside the Jewel. If you like light weight rifles you will prefer the Kimber.

For whitetail hunting, the 7mm-08 has to be the ideal cartridge.  I should know,  I own 3 or 4 of them and I just love them.

The 7mmWSM is about the same as a 7mm Rem Mag.  The 7mag is an awesome round, but just way too much power for deer hunting, especially within 100 yards where most shots are taken.

IMHO, there are three drawbacks to the 7mmWSM and they are as follows:

1)  They are not popular like the 7mm-08.  As such, there is limited factory ammo, which is tough to begin with, then imagine you are out in the woods and the local stores have never even heard of a 7mmWSM.

2)  Given that they are not as popular, there is a chance that out of the 3 WSMs (270, 7mm, and 300) the 7mmWSM will go by the wayside.

3)  There is significantly more recoil than the 7mm-08, so you have to decide if you can handle it.

Hands down the Kimber Montana... I own 4 model M70's,  A mid 70's XTR 270 that shoots like the wind,  wood stock XTR heavy brl 243win made 1991, 1st year Classic featherweight 270win and I have a Classic supergrade in 264win...So I am very fond of model 70's. However I should
own a new kimber lightweights. Just can't sell old friends. Kimber Montana
doesn't have a floor plate, some care about that , others no big deal or a plus....That a look a the Browning titanium in short mag. Wow! ..talk about
sweet, best abolt ever made and expensive 1350.00 . Local gunshop got one in 270shortmag and 300shortmag. The 270 is gone, and the 300 is calling me....The camo color stock is like it or leave it, but everyone who picks it up goes real nice gun.

Thanks for your help guys,  I'm sticking to the original plan of buying the Kimber - Not the most detailed gun in the world, but I am sure it will make for a great deer hunting gun.   :D

Hunting Guy,

Have you decided what cartridge you will get?

Zachary,

The 84M Montana only comes in (.243 Win., .260 Rem., 7mm-08 Rem., .308 Win.) and the 8400 Montana's are all of the WSM cartridges.  I am going with the 7mm-08.

I just called my local dealer, the gun went up $200.00 from a few months ago every where I have checked.  It was $800 a few months back (maybe it was 4 or 5), now it is $1000.  He said they took a price jump.

Really sucks, but I still am going to buy the gun - it sounds like a tackdriver and an all around good deer hunting rifle.
