NEF/H&R Prairie Dog set-ups? What will you be shooting?
« on: January 26, 2005, 07:16:48 AM »
Since I can't make the big prairie dog shoot, I would feel like more a part if I knew what H&R set-ups you guys will be sporting.

If I could make it, I'd have to use my .30-30 with a Swift 6-18x44 scope loaded with Hornady .308 110gr spitzers with 37 gr of W748  & Fed GM210M primers.

I'll probably be the least "handi" of the folks there.  :)  But I do have my old H&R Model 157 in .30-30 I will have along just to say I'm shooting a handi. It wears iron sights only, no scope. I will use it some but....

Most of my shooting will be done with these three rife set ups.

1. Remington VLS rifle in .223 Remington. Scope will likely be one of the new Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21s. Suspect I'll use Weaver bases and Burris Signature Zee rings to mount it.

2. Savage 93R17BVSS .17hmr. Still undecided on this one. Might mount a Bushnell Banner 4-12 or might mount an old Leupold Compact 3-9 AO EFR scope.

3. Remington 700 VLS in .243 Winchester. This will be my go-to for windy conditions. I'll likely mount a Bushnell Banner 6-18 on it.

I've toyed with bringing a .22LR and/or a .22 Magnum along but probably won't.

I probably will have my Freedom Arms Model 83 in .44 Magnum along to pot shoot a few with just for the heck of it. Hope to have enough ammo loaded up to let anyone else who wants to check out the FA guns an opportunity.

I probably won't be doing a lot of shooting, but I will have the following on hand....just in case

H&R Ultra in .223 with a Springfield Armory 4-16X56 Scope, shooting a 40 grain Hornady V Max with BLC2.

NEF Handi Rifle in 7MM-08 with a Simmons 44Mag 4-12X44, shooting a 120 grain Seirra Soft Point and Varget.

Colt AR15 in .223 with a Weaver V24 6-24X42 Scope, shooting a 55 grain V Max and Varget.

I also have a 45-70 barrel that I will probably have on hand, just in case a few of them charge us    It has a Weaver K4 on it, and shoots a 405 grain cast (Lee Mold 459-405HB) bullet that was cast for me by Leftoverdj.

Steve 48 is bringing a NEF 223, a M700 223, a Ruger #1 22-250, a 788 in 6mm, and a 22 cal for the real "stupid "ones. Tommy Mace will bring a Handi Rifle in 223, a M700 in 223 and a M700 in 22-250. I and Tommy do a lot of Prairie Dog shooting here in Kansas. We have cleaned out a few towns and love to shoot lots of rounds. We change rifles frequently at the shoots because the barrels heat up so quick. A good set of optics, range finders, a good bench, plenty of H2o and shade goes a long way. You have to factor in the wind especially with light bullets. We will be there with bells on. Steve 48

Hi all, doesn't look like I'll be able to come home to Oklahoma to shoot the little prairie poodles.  I have shot many of them in Oklahoma and South Dakota while in the Air Force.  Don't leave your .22 rimfires at home!  I slayed many of the prairie dogs with a .22.  The .22 won't scare them as bad as the cannons and you will get more shooting.  It's a blast the farmers generally love you for eliminating the hole diggers.  It's not safe to ride a horse through an area infested with prairie dogs.  Just remember to take head shots or the little buggers will make it back to their hole.  Have fun!

Dang, I probably won't be able to make it but I'll tell you one thing.  I have lived in that part of OK.  Anything that can stand up in the wind out there is strong.  I think it is a good idea to bring along a 45-70 just in case one gets mad and charges you.  When you get there, take notice of which way all the trees grow. :-D  :-D (when you can find one) Then you will know what I am talking about.

Hey, TomVan,
See you are from Wylie, TX.  Man there is one fine gun builder there.  Makes the Viper benchrest actions.  Don't know him but have read a lot about him and his work.  I actually lust after one of them drop port actions of his.  Are you acquainted with him?  Shiller Actions or Viper Actions.

My 223 Ultra Varmit with the plastic stocks, sold the orginals to Tim (quickdtoo), but very happy with the new ones.
Also the 44mag barrel and the NEW 7.62X39 barrel when it gets here.
A Remington Model 7FS in 7mm-08.
And the NEW FA Model 97 in 44 Special that Graybeard helped me get from the gun shop that he does business with. Saved over $200.00 from a gun shop around the house.
If we are not to loaded down too much, might bring the T/C 22 Classic Benchmark w/ a Leupold 6X42AO Tactial for the dummies up close.

I'll just bring a few guns and just a few rounds for each gun.

L1A1 .308Win @500 rounds
Ruger Target .204 @500 rounds
H&R Ultra  223 @500 rounds
Rem. 300WBY @200 rounds
WBY 460WBY @200 round

That should be enough guns and ammo for a 3 day weekend. I hope its enough :-) if not I'll watch.

I notice that there's a lot of people bringing larger caliber rifles.  I don't have a problem with that, I shoot some of my larger caliber guns at prairie dogs all the time.

I just want to make sure that, if you do bring a large caliber like a 45-70 or even a .308 Winchester, that you also bring a smaller caliber (.223 or 22-250 and even the .243 or 6MM) to do the majority of your shooting with.

This is for two reasons:

1.  You'll have more fun watching the bullet impact through your scope with the smaller calibers.

2.  Safety.  If we are shooting large volumes of the larger caliber rifles that aren't designed to blow up on impact, we may be shooting holes in someone's barn or house
