New Briggs & Stratton 5HP FOURSTROKE Outboard motor
« on: July 30, 2003, 10:16:08 AM »
I just recieved my new Briggs & Stratton 5HP forustroke outboard motor and it looks awesome!!!! There are places here that rent 12' & 14' aluminum boats with no motors and the lakes are too big to row.  This is a great idea and I wanted to make one for such a long time.  It was $699 on sale with shipping included can't beat that price.  Yes I know it isn't that heavy duty but to just putt/troll its perfect.   I can't wait to use it now.

I never had the misses on the water yet this is my chance to take her out and putt around the lake for sure.  And if she likes it I have been looking at a new nitro 22' bass boat you just never know if she gets hooked on boating and fishing too.

In LA, they are called Go Devils.  Handy gadgets.  Since they are air cooled, you don't have to worry about stopping up a water pump.  I assume the outboard version is a little different than a go-devil, but probably not much.  I've seen guys push a duck rig through a hay field with 2 inches of water on it at about 10 mph with one of those sorts of motors.  Go where the biguns is I guess.

I have seen this motor in different catalogs and since my new Yamaha 15 hp motor 2 stroke (DEC. 2002, $1,654.00) was stolen from my boat (dam thieves) 2 weeks ago   :(  .  I have been thinking about buying one of these as a replacement.  I know the speed will not be the same, my 12 ft. alumin. boat flew with that Yamaha 15 hp, I am really going to miss that speed  .  But I will need a motor I can carry from the shore up hill to my home, I read it weighs only 54 pounds so this might be the right weight motor for carrying.  I am not taking any more chances that those thieves will come back to get another motor, those thieves came prepared, they came in another boat or raft, cut off the chain and the locks with a heavy duty bolt cutter that I had on my Yamaha motor like they were made of butter and stole the motor.   The boat is only about 80 ft on the shore in front of my home (no access from the shore), visible from the porch of my home the motor was chained to the boat with a lock and the mounts adjustments were locked together as not to screw open. Sadly they stole the motor during the night and I didn't realize it to the next day in the morning. :(

Anyway, I would like to know more about your new motor once you have tried it, that is if you can do me this favor.   Is it easy to carry?  How's the power on the motor, I have been told that gasoline only (4 stroke) boat motors have less power than mixed gasoline motors?  Does it start up easy?  I have seen/heard that gasoline only (4 stroke) boat motors are more silent, but the models I have seen are water cooled and from what I read this one is air cooled, so I am not sure about the noise factor, air cooled motors tend to be loud, let me know what kind of noise does it make.   If it is silent it will give me a advantage when trolling and if it is easy to carry I will buy it, it should be the right motor to fit my needs to avoid being ripped off again.

I sure will appreciate the info.  8)

Thank you.
Eddie

Any more responses about this motor?

It sure looks like it would be handy.

but can it be of any quality at half the price of mercs and other standard outboards of this hp.

I have to believe they will be fairly noisy, as the they don't exhaust underwater.  Still, a handy motor for some applications.

I don't think Big Bill is talking about a Go-Devil.  The 5hp outboard and the Go-Devil is two entirely differant things.  Briggs just started making a standard 5hp four stroke outboard.  New outboard motor to the market.  The Go-Devil is very populer here in Alaska.  It has the advantage of being able to lift half the prop out of the water in shallow creeks and crossing sand and gravel bars in rivers.  Also being that it is air cooled the glacial silt suspended in the rivers won't eat up the water pump.  Most Go-Devils in use here are 65hp.  A few people have the 45hp model but they are limited where they can go, due to the swift currents in our rivers.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I went to their website, looks like a good idea. No dealers in my area. (Pgh. Pa) The big question is, what about the noise? How loud are they? Are they louder than a 2 cycle of equivalent HP? Woodbutcher
