some tlc for my old adl
« on: March 15, 2005, 06:23:05 AM »
So my trusty 1983 remy adl 7mm-mag needs some help. I don't mind the scratches and dings it gets each year from mn. deer season, lots of memories in this rifle; the thing I do want to fix is the finish is getting cloudy where on the rifle my hands spend most of there time. Short of totally refinishing it is there something I can do to fix this?

Can't help w/the orig but ---
Keep an eye on E-Bay and pick up a synthetic stock.  Can usually find a factory Remington available at good price.
Makes it nice not to worry about scratching up a good stock.
Then you can clean up the orig at your leisure.

sorry guys, but the wood stock is staying on. Maybe I can lightly sand it and reapply some oil?

You might try a light sanding, then a light coat of poly, I dont think you will get thru the poly finish thats on it already, dont know what they used back then but you might try that. :D    JIM

That's exactly right -- your rifle has a polyeurethene finish, and moisture under the finish is causing the clouding.  Strip it first -- that is, apply a chemical stripper -- to minimize the sanding needed.  Then finish with increasingly finer grades of sandpaper, raising the grain (dampen with a cloth, then gently heat) between sanding sessions.  Finish with oil -- you could use tung oil, or any of a dozen commercially available finishes.

I have a Kimber M82 .22 that has had literally hundreds of thousands of rounds through it -- it's about as old as your ADL.  Thanks to its oil finish, it simply shows a high shine where the hands hold it.

Send to pac-nor for a truing of the action, a #4 fluted SS barrel, have them sent to out for Matte Blue and then on to Phoenix for a McSwirley.  Then be prepared to share better memories.

I wouldn't touch the stock at all.  Given what you said in your earlier post - that those scratches represent alot of memories, why would you want to erase those memories?

As for the finish, I can sorta kinda justify repairing that and not the stock.  Have you considered taking the gun to a good gunsmith and asking how much he would charge to refinish it?  It might be worth the money.
