Here's your chance, what cartridge next.
« on: February 09, 2003, 05:23:31 PM »
I have a 260 rem 14" SS from VVC with a scope but need a open sighted barrel for casaul shooting. This is what I have decided so far 14"  SS open  sights but drilled and tapped as well. What I don't know is what cartridge. I have a redhawk in 45 colt so don't need another one. Hard to justify to the wife. Am open to suggestions. Have thought about everything from a 22lr up to a 300 whisper. Wildcats not a problem. Need a round that would be fun to shoot at less than 100 yds. Have really been leaning towards the 41 Mag but that is mainly because I like to be different.  Recoil can't be to bad. I want something that I can bring to the range and shoot 100-200 rounds and not feel to bad after. Now that I think about it maybe a 22 K Hornet, 221 fireball, 6.5 tcu..... See what I mean no cure. So fellas If you have an opinion, and I hope you do, let me know. Thanks. :D

Wow,
  Blanks slate time!  How about 32-20, 357 Mag, 44-40, 38-40, 32-40, 38-55, 25-20, 218 bee, 45 acp.....
I have a 32-20 barrel and it is just a barrel of fun, accurate, flexible and when you fire it at the range, everyone wants to try it.

My opinion only,

Try the 7BR it gives 7-30 Waters power in a more accurate case with less powder.

.22lr.....don't do as did and keep putting it off.  After I finally got one ( I now have 3 ) they get shot more than any barrel I have.  I kept going to get one and would always run up on a deal on another barrel that seemed so much neater!!!!!My advice to anyone getting a contender is to get .22lr FIRST.        GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt    :D

I"ll chime in as well.  It seems you don't own a varmit/fun gun.  I have a 223 for my Contender and Dad has a 22-250 for his Encore.  Have shot both but prefer my 223 to the 22-250 because it's more compact.  When I get serious about shooting a woodchuck I drag out the 06 Encore and 130 gr bullets.  The 223 and 22-250 are both really fun to shoot without much recoil.

I could also be talked into a 6mm of some sort that could pull double duty in the plinking/varmit category.  Whatever you choose you can't go wrong with another barrel - unless you ask my wife..................

My knee-jerk reaction would be a .22lr. MOST fun for the dollar. But if you are talking Encore, That can cost, Big Time! I would then look at the 222-223 family of cartriges. If you want to cast your bullets, you can reload for almost rimfire prices, using surplus brass & powders, and sale-priced primers. Water-quenched wheelweights suffice fo most uses, and jacketed bullets can often be scrounged at below-retail prices. Plus you have the option of loading down to rimfire velocities, or up to full-house loads. A 6mm or 25cal fits the bill too, but you burn more powder with a bigger case, and the bullets use up casting alloy faster.
There would be something said for the .357 Mag/Max, too. The widest variety of factory loads, cheap reloads, and, to top it all off, you have a hunting cartrige if you need it.
I guess you better figger on getting more than one barrel.   :)   Bug.

I can only say that I plan on getting a .22 match barrel next for my contender. (Unless I find a great deal on something else first) I only have one barrel now and it is a 300 whisper. I haven't shot it much but it seems like it is going to be a lot of fun to play with.

Does your whisper have open sights? How is its recoil like a 357 mag, 44 mag .... . Any of you guys have a 256 mag. How do you like it.

Outlawsix my whisper is scoped and I have a new scope ordered that I'm waiting on now. I'd have to say with full hunting loads recoil is about like the 357 mag . I have some fireforming loads that I'm wait for the new scope to shoot. They recoil about like a 38 special.

Keep it coming fellas. So far I am more confused than before but this is definately a good thing. I should have mentioned that I have 7 STW, 45-70, 22-250 Ack. and 50 ML in rifle barrels. So my main thing is for something fun, open sights, and mild recoil in a pistol. Wonder if a 300 whisper would be better served by a scope. If so it's a maybe. The 357 Mag/ Max is in the running along with 222 or 223, 6 & 7 BR, 256 Mag, Heck I'm even open to the teenagers 14, 17, 19 maybe even a 20. Maybe one on a K hornet case. Even the blackpowder rounds sound good especially that 32-30 or 25-20.

I gotta agree with the .22 LR Match....super acccurate, super cheap, and a whole buttload of fun. If you want somethin with a little more (ok, a lot more) speed...id have to vote for the .223. Still super accurate, still fairly cheap, and still a buttload of fun.
