does anyone have quick release rings on a huntsman and if you do ....what height rings do they have to be for the hammer to clear the bottom of the scope? thanks in advance......bearit....
bearit,
I have the HIGH Warne QD lever rings on my Huntsman with the H&R base. My scope is a 3-9x42 Smith & Wesson (very nice scope by the way). I probably could have gotten away with MEDIUMS if I would have removed the rear sight, but that is why I wanted QD rings. The big problem with mounting scopes is that the ocular end of the scopes vary in diameter and length, which makes hammer clearance a problem. Some times you can get way with shorter height rings if the hammer comes to rest just ahead of the ocular eyepiece where it tapers down toward the power ring or tube, eye relief will determine that.
If you tell us what kind of scope you plan on mounting, we will be better prepared to tell you what height ring you will need. Chances are that someone here will already have the very same set-up. I have four scoped H&R/NEF's and everyone of them wears a different scope and ring set-up, some with less than 1/16" clearance at the hammer. So, give us the scope info and we can go from there.
I have a 1.75-4x32 Bushnell Trophy on my 20ga Ultra Slug Hunter LE, the ocular bell is so large in diameter that I had to use HIGH Burris ZEE Rings.
I have a 4-12x44AO Simmons Whitetail Classic on my .17HMR Sportster, MEDIUM Burris ZEE Rings, but the hammer falls into the taper at the front of the ocular eyepiece. Would need HIGH if the eye relief was any different.
I have a 4-18x42AO Smith & Wesson on my .223 Ultra Varmint, MEDIUM Warne QD Rings, but again the hammer falls into the taper between the ocular bell and the power ring. Again would need HIGH if the eye relief was any different.
I have been very LUCKY with the eye relief of my scopes letting me get away with shorter rings, your positioning due to your build and LOP may be different.
Hope I didn't confuse you more, but the bottom line is HIGH rings will always work, but we all want our scopes as low as possible. Pick your scope and we can go from there!
