military sling for my 22 rim fire sportster
« on: February 08, 2005, 09:37:00 AM »
hi -

the 22 rim fire i ordered last november that i shipped back to the factory (for a bit of clean up on the machine tools, remove the parkerized finish and reblue, and install iron sights) arrived today. so i went out to walmart and picked up a nice leather military sling.

being an electrical engineer, the first thing i do whenever i buy something new is to throw out the instructions. this time no luck, there were no instructions with the sling.

it is made by saddle mate and is all leather and has two forked hooks that look like they fit through the holes in the belt and then get hammered down or something. so the question is "Is there some standard way of hooking this thing up ?", i would assume that being military style, it would follow some standard military convention. any pictures ?

any help here ???

SG, don't hammer the brass hooks down! That is how you are able to adjust the length of the sling. It should have 2 leather "keepers" (small leather loops) that the sling slides through at each end and are positioned near the sling swivels when the final adjustment is decided upon. I will try to find some directions and get them to you. Anyone else here feel free to jump in, please!!!. I have not used this type of sling in years but think I still have one around....<><....

Find some one that was in the Army in the M14days or before. I used to know how to use the sling but it's been to many years. I had an NCOIC at one time who had done so much shooting with the sling around his bicept that his arm was actually a little deformed.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun
