My books dont show year of manu. however any competent gunsmith will be able to look it over and be able to tell you pre or post 64 by design. :D    JIM

The 27'th edition Gun Traders Guide lists the Model 53 as made by Savage.
Numrich (Gun Parts) lists it as a Winchester model 70!
I'm confused!

I have a picture of one in the 1970 Gun Digest and it doesn't look anything like a Savage. Especially the bolt handle which on a Savage is at the rearward most portion of the bolt and the Winchester and Sears Model 53 has a handle about one inch in from the end. I cross referenced the scope mounts for a Sears Model 53 and they are identical to the Winchester Model 70 but not the Savage in any configuration. It is unlikely that Savage tooled their production line to produce something that doesn't already carry the Savage name such as the 110. Your rifle is, with almost 100% certainty, a Model 70. The unfortunate news is that the scope base numbers for a Model 53 aren't the same as a pre-1964, they match the 1964 and later,  Winchester Model 70, 670 and 770. A rifle of this sort in good condition should bring around $275 - $300. They are quality guns and just go by a name other than Winchester. An aftermarket stock for a Model 70 might dress it up a bit. If you're into it right($$$), I'd keep it. If you're going to buy it, offer $250. Good Luck

Look at the bolt. If there is an external extractor, the rifle is pre-64.If the bolt is a push feed, there will not be an an external extractor. therefore the rifle will be post -64 design. I have one in 30-06, it shoots well.
Shoot straight , shoot often.

Brother in law has one, post 64, made by Winchester. Biggest difference is finish and safety lever is flat where the Mod. 70 is round and knurled.
