Suggestions for accuracy from 20 gauge slug encore
« on: February 17, 2005, 05:54:39 AM »
Picked up a rifled 20 gauge encore (factory barrel) onto which I placed a Leupold shotgun scope.  I have tried Winchester and Federal shells in both 2 3/4 and 3 inch varieties.  Accuracy leaves a lot to be desired at both 50 yards (3 - 4 inch groups off bags) and 100 yards (don't ask).

Accordingly, I am looking for advice on shell selection and on accurizing my new encore.

Thanks in advance!

Try the Remington copper solids. I have great accuracy with them. 2 to 2 1/2  inch groups at 100 yards.  :D

Question, did you shoot the saboted slug or regular slug?  The barrel is meant to shoot only saboted slugs.  Mine will shoot either the Remington or Winchester saboted slug well (around 2 inches center to center for five shots, at 100 yards).  The barrel is subject to the same constraints as all of the Encore barrels.  I used washers to free float the barrel.  The barrel is sensitive to how it is rested and plastic from the sabots does collect in the rifling and need to be cleaned out from time to time.  That said it maneuvers easily in a tree stand and shoots slugs with the feel of a rifle trigger.

I used sabotted slugs.  As I am new to the encore, I am not sure what is meant by " same constraints as all of the Encore barrels. "  Is there anything other than inserting washers or O-rings that I should be doing?

I have a 4x leupold mounted on mine. I shot a 5 shot group that went through the same hole at 100 yards at an indoor range. I've noticed a cross0-wind will open up the group quite a bit. Downside we are talking about $2.50 per shot. These are in a black box v. te Winchester BRI sabots in a gray box.

I got a 3x7 Nikon shotgun scope on it. I am using Federal 20 ga. 3" 5/8 oz. Hydra-shok HP Magnum I am getting a 2" group at 100 yards. I try alot of different rounds ont to good. Most 2 3/4" rounds I got a 5" to a 6" group. I will stay with the 3" Federal, they are a little pricies but they shot great. Just my two cent.
