Browning Micro Hunter 308 vs 7mm08 vs 270WSM
« on: February 20, 2005, 01:57:28 PM »
Just got back from shooting the browning micro hunter in 223 not bad groups for first box ammo and factory 5# trigger around an inch I will work on both. :-)
Since I like the little gun I figured I would like one in a deer caliber nice to carry around all day at 6lbs 4oz ( wish remington made the model 7 left handed)
I'm looking for opinions on this rifle and caliber I already have 243, 3006, 270win, 7mm rem mag

What I'd really like is a Hunter model with a 23" barrel in 7-08.  The micro Hunter has a 20" barrel.  If you want a 270 WSM I'd get one in a Hunter Model.  If you want to stay with a Micro hunter I'd get a 7-08.

How does the shorter LOP work for you?

Browning no longer lists the hunter model left handed in 7mm 08 only the 4 wsm cartridges so that rules that out for me. In the micro they do have the 270wsm with 22" barrel just not sure I want that hot of a round in such a light gun or barrel contour think I might be leaning more toward the 7mm 08 just not sure I should rule out the other two decisions decisions.
As far as the shorter LOP goes at first it felt kind of odd so tried mounting it with my hunting coat and found mount a little quicker less chance of it hanging up on my coat

I would get the 7mm-08 and not look back.  The cartridge would be almost perfect for such a gun for deer.

You already have a .30-06, so the .308 is not a significant difference.  You have a 270 winchester, so while a .270WSM is significantly faster, such a cartridge needs, in my opinion, a longer barrel - like 24".

While you have a 7mm Rem Mag, it is a very fast 7mm cartridge.  So while the 7mm-08 is significantly shorter and slower, it will be less affected by the shorter barrel.  Plus, the 7mm-08 is really the ideal deer cartridge out to 250 yards - you really don't need anything bigger or faster.

I will second Zachary's recommendation. The .308 would be just too close to your .30-06, and I can't see the attraction of the WSM's in the micro.
