Winchester Model 70 Ranger
« on: February 10, 2005, 09:50:25 AM »
I'm looking for a relatively low-cost bolt action rifle in .30-'06. I'm considering Ruger, Remington, CZ, Winchester, Savage, etc. Among other things, I've found a like-new Winchester Model 70 Ranger in this caliber. Can someone tell me what is different about the Ranger model as opposed to some other Model 70? Thanks.

Ranger is a winchester model denoting a lower standard of finish and a cheaper stock material.  Usually on the M70 they are bead blasted and blued and the stock is 'whitewood' usually birch..  The last I had used the exact same profile as the pushfeed M70 featherweights and was a 243.  I happened on a featherweight stock for cheap and it fit just fine.  Sold the origianl to a riend upgrading a 'youth' model and ended up with very little invested..  I was forced to sell it to a friend when his daughter fell in love with the rifle and the caliber. Last I heard he's still smiling and she's happy as a clam, only the local deer are unhappy.  That 243 shot 100 grain sierras (3 shot groups) well under an inch(average).  I did work a bit of the trigger but found it no more trouble than a 700 to adjust..  different but not difficult.  They are considerably lower priced than the standard featherweight...

As already stated, you won't get as slick a finish or a walnut stock. Couple other things, blind magazine well (no hinged floorplate), no fore end tip. I have shot several M70 Rangers, they do just fine.

No need to go on about the finish; others have done that quite well and I can confirm all that was said.

The first centerfire rifle I bought with my overtime money in 1986 was a Model 70 Ranger (push feed) in .30-06.  It was one of the best, if not the best, shooting rifle I have ever had.  To this day, I regret trading it off.  I don't think you could go wrong with one.  Mine wasn't real pretty, but it could shoot circles around all of my freinds Remington BDL's and Ruger M77's.

I would invest in a quality scope, though, with good bases and rings.  That will help to wring all of the potential out of your rifle.
