I'm not smart enough to even make a reasonable guess as to what may have caused that gouge/mark.  But, I do note that there sure isn't much erosion/corrosion or honest wear around the touch/fuze hole. :shock:

Agree.  About the only conclusion I would draw would be to the shape of the thing that interacted - cylindrical or spherical.  Whether in combat or just from mis-handling - who knows?  Then too, there might be an account by someone.

Looks like the imprint of the shooters forehead, caused by too short of a fuze.  :)

If that's an original Civil War piece, it could possibly have been caused by a glancing hit by a solid shot coming from counter battery fire. I've seen a couple of tubes that have dents from being hit by opposing artillery.
