Orbea .38 largo buenos aires police revolver
« on: January 31, 2005, 12:24:27 PM »
Hey all,

Pretty soon I will be able to get a handgun. I am on a very tight budget. I can remember a few years ago Gun List had a spanish copy of a smith and wesson revolver for like $50. It was chambered in the spanish black powder version of the .38 special, the .38 Largo. They were made in eibar spain between 1925 and 1935. The seller said they were used extensively by the Buenos Aires police department. They also hinted that mild smokeless loads might be OK in it. I don't think I would trust a BP gun with smokeless though.

I am not afraid of loading black powder cartriges. I already have the dies. I'm just wondering if these old revolvers are still available anywhere. A few internet searches turn up hardly anything. Any thoughts, or should I buy another copy of gunlist and look some more?

Pick up a copy of "Shotgun News".  I've seen them listed there, in the past.

I just did some interesting research. One gentelman said he was getting over 775 fps from a black powder loaded .38 special and a 6 inch barrel revolver. He was using 160 grain lrns'. Federal's catalog from 2004 shows their American Eagle 158 grain LRN at 760 fps. This makes the black powder load considerably hotter than the federal factory stuff. If the revolver is stout enough to load to this type of performance I can always use something clean like American Pioneer powder and have a pretty sweet shooter, I think.

The SOG flier has Orbea revolvers listed for $19.95 each 2 for $17.95 each. These are listed as non-functioning gunsmith specials for parts. They all have barrels, frame and cylinder.
