New guy, already having trouble!!
« on: January 30, 2005, 02:31:11 PM »
I was on the fence for a long time about buying a new H&R/NEF. I read as much as I could about them, and even fired a couple from friends that own them. I have yet to hear one complaint verbally about them in any aspect. So, finally after himhawing around forever, I made the plunge. I purchase a new H&R Ultra HB Varmint in .243win.
I must say, it impressed me a great deal when I frist took it out of the box. I played with it, ejected a few live rounds from it (I was like a little kid with the ejector, something my Encore lacks  ). Speaking of Encore, I even, for a split second thought of offing it and getting every barrel I could for my Ultra.
Then I went to the range. Here's where the problem starts. It shoots like a dream, but only ejects half the time. I got 13 rounds threw it, got disgusted, packed up, and went home. Can anyone help a new guy out? Or am I best to call the manufacturer (would rather like to be last resort). Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

Clean it!!!!! (If you haven't already) remove  the butt stock from the frame and get some spray carburator or brake cleaner and throughly wash out the frame. Then be sure there is no oil in the chamber. Some polish the chamber with Flitz (do a search on chamber polishing) Good Luck, Enjoy that Handi

FTE is a common problem with new Handis and Ultras, a good chamber cleaning and polishing with JB Bore compound or Flitz will solve the problem along with keeping the chamber clean and dry. Some use an empty case with a screw stud in the primer pocket, chucked up in your drill with flitz or JB on it, I like a patch wrapped bore mop chucked in a drill with a piece of cleaning rod.

Hope this helps,

Tim

I had the same problem with my new HB .243.

It is very easy to fix.  I did the fix last night and verified it today at the range.

Buy a bore mop for a .410 shotgun.  They are the perfect size for polishing .243, .308, etc. chambers.

Then buy some metal polish.  I used Noxon 7, which I bought at Home Depot.

Put the bore mop on a single length of cleaning rod.  Use a drill to slowly spin the bore mop and polish.

Only 200-400 revolutions of the bore mop and polish should solve the problem.  I'd reapply polish to the bore mop every 100 revolutions.

Thanks guys. I will do all of the above. I did clean it when I got it, as I do with every new gun. However, I didn't get super detailed about it. I will now, along with the chamber polishing. I thought about that on my way home. But, I wanted to hear it from you guys first. Thanks.
