Got to reading this forum and ran out and got 2 Handi's in some tradin.2 223's blue/wood one is heavy barrel.Here's my dilemma One has good wood,the heavy barrel the reg. barrel has homely wood,real ugly,looks like ya might shoot at it rather than shoot with it.I'm switchin to all Handi's.I need a .223 for yotes and groundhogs here in Ohio,a muzzle loader for here in Ohio.I have a little place in S. Texas and I'm dyin to hunt hogs,yotes and deer there.I like the survivor stock for one and I need an occasional deer and elk caliber for Idaho. Should I keep both guns? Do you think when I send one to NEF for ML or other calipers they would credit me for the wood on a survivor stock?

Will a survivor stock work on a ML ? How bought the forend?Should I sell one and just build off of the one I keep or keep both of them.Fixed income here.What about a spectum of barrels ? What would you do to get the most Handi for the buck? .308,.280,4570,30/06,2506,22/250?

Please round me out without breakin the bank,thx

i like to refer to the handi wood stocks as pallet wood

its a good term for it,not ugly.the guys here will eat you alive for saying that.i just say pallet wood and they will accept that.pallet wood gets painted black at my house.

270,280 or 30-06 will do you fine for any animal in North America :wink:

Jeffs correct...but the problem is the new plain Handi stocks aren't just ugly...they are BUTT Ugly...and it would take several coats of black paint to help them :-D ...but they are a durn site prettier than those Survivor stocks anyday of the week...(IMHO)...and at least they come with a nice recoil pad on them...

mrlizzard...get the regular synthetic stocks if you want them...they are more comfortable to shoot and look a-lot better than the SUrvivor stocks...or...trade or buy some nice Laminated ones from NEF and put them on...as far as your caliber choices...Idaho deer and elk...the best 3 have already been said...

Mr. Lizzard, I would not over look the 308, If you reload,
It do any thing you need to do. I have had one since they
came out in thay caliber, ( not H&R0 but has 22 inch barrel.

Why not take that "pallet" wood and do it a favor. Paint stripper,some stain, Tru oil, rubbing compound, and some time is all it takes. Great wintertime project. WDO

Whitedog how does the laminate take stain. Anything different from a regular wood stock? And have you tried tung oil on a laminate?

You have to use a DYE type stain. Don't use a PIGMENT type stain. This type of stain really brings out the grain. I used a stain made for Kentucky long rifles that was color matched to golden age rifles as produced by the York and Adams county schools of gunsmithing. Now, you don't have to go with something that fancy. Just get a dye stain at woodcraft or a woodworking store. Not at a home center. The stuff I used is Alcohol based. Don't just tung oil! Tru oil is the stuff you want!!WDO

Thanks Mac, I used some stain that my Dad had left over from a few years ago after he built his last flintlock rifle. He said he got it from Golden Age Arms somewhere in Ohio. I did a search and came up blank. Here it is.....

But this stuff will work too.....

I just picked up a "pallet wood" schnabel forend and monte stock to reno for the Sportster. You have set the bar high, hope I can get close!

There is a definite difference between the dye stains and the regular pigmented stains. The dye stains are usually alcohol based. Try looking for leather dyes. I read somewhere about a guy using leather dyes to stain his wood stocks. These type dyes are stronger and soak into the wood better. Also they are probably more permanent. I think Tandy's has these stains. I haven't tried but I bet you could do a search for Tandy or leather dyes and find just what you need. As a finish I much prefer a urethane finish, much more durable and waterproof.

Be careful with leather stains. Some also contain H2O with can raise the grain. This can leave you with a "fuzzy" stock that you will have to deal with in the finish coats. Speaking of fuzzy, There will be a lot of sanding of your stock after you strip it. I think that NEF just sands them with 80 grit and stops. I started with 100 grit, then 120 ,150,180,220 before I got all the sanding scratch marks out. As for the urethane finish, I am not skilled enough to make it look like it was done in a factory. With Tru oil it looks like it was done in a factory after a rub out. And you can make it any sheen that you care to. I find it very durable and if it gets a scratch you can rub it out or sand the whole stock and apply another coat. I would dare to say that most custom stock makers use Tru-oil. WDO

I saw the address on the bottle of stain pictured above, I used to live in Gettysburg, Pa ,in fact, about five minutes from there. I never even heard of York and Adams county School of Gunsmithing. How long ago was this? My Dad still lives there, I'll hae to make a trip up there and see whats around there now. Nice job on that stock, I'm a blacksmith when it comes to word working, I guess I'll just live with pallet wood for a while. :wink:

Don't know how but my friend was a sign painter,he likes guns and a great shooter.He used shoe polish to color hi plain stocks and then finished them and they were jaw droppers.You would never know they were not megabuck stocks.

Golden Age Arms closed their doors within the past two years or so, as I can't remember exactly when. It used to be in a little town called Ashley, just north of Delaware.
