30-30 Handi?
« on: January 18, 2005, 02:38:53 AM »
I just got my 30-30 Handi this weekend. I had another 30-30, but a buddy uses it I won't be prying it from his hands any time soon. I am wondering though if anyone loads any pointed bullets for there 30-30? If so, how do they work? What are some of your other pet loads for your Handi?

257Robt: Yes, just fine, just keep them seperate from anything that might be loaded into a tube magazine. Keep'em In The Black:  :D <>< Duce:

I bought a 30-30 2 weeks ago...It shoots remington 150grains great....Quarter group at 75 yards with a williams peap and a brass piece added to the top of the front sight......I'm real happy with that! :-)

The 30-30 Handi is well suited to spire point bullets. I have had great luck with the 130 and 140 gr. Barnes X bullets and 130 gr. Hornady SSSP's.

I use the Hornady offering as an inexpensive practise round, and the Barnes bullets as my whitetail hunting rounds.

I use Winchester brass with either Rem. 9 1/2M or CCI 250 primers and Winchester 748 propellant. I weigh my cases and use the ones closet to 130 grains. I have also used Remington cases with good success. Federal cases weigh over 140 grains and show pressure signs with top loading density. I have been able to load some fairly heavy charges of propellant, and have attained 2600 fps in both of my rifles. Each of my two 30-30's require a different loading and different COL. I was amazed at the accuracy shown in the Handi by the Barnes X bullet. YMMV

Hope this helps...........Chainsaw

Now if Barnes only made a 110 grain XLC bullet we would have an ideal PD gun :wink:  :wink:

Mac, I think that Speer makes a 110 grain spire point and I believe that Paco Kelly used this by nipping off the point so it could be loaded for the tubular magazine of the 30-30 lever gun. I think it would make an ideal bullet for the Handi without any tip modification.

That would be a screamer out of a handi loaded with the right propellant. :shock:

I worked up a load this fall for my .30-30 using 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, 30.5 grains of IMR 3031, Remington case and Federal 210 primer.  I was getting about 2200 FPS. I haven't gotten a chance to try them on any game animals, but the accuracy was excellent.  At 2200 FPS they should be right in the perfect velocity range for a Ballistic tip bullet.
Hope this helps;
