Wichita Bolt action pistol rechamber and need a scope mount
« on: January 09, 2005, 08:53:19 PM »
Can the Wichita 7 mm BR bolt action be rechambered to a more potent round that shares the same bolt face diameter & rim config? Can the bolt be modified? Can a replacement bolt be purchased?
Whose scope mount will fit this 7mm BR pistol which now wears its original IMSA iron sights? Can anyone recc a reputable 'smith to do this work? Thanks.

Not sure what the max loaded length that action will eject, but if you have room with the 7 BR you could always go to something with a longer case body, such as a 7X1.75 or even 7mm-08 if there is room. You're only limited by action length as long as you stick to the same case head size. 30 BR would work fine, not sure you'd gain much other than be able to fire somewhat heavier bullets. How much load development have you done with the 7 BR? Using VV 133 powder we have been able to equal 7mm-08 performance in blueprinted Remington actions using bushed firing pins and Lapua brass. Not that I'm recommending pushing things that hard but it's possible if your gun is built right and you really feel you need to do that. Don't try doing that with a factory gun though!

Not sure what you want to end up with but most likely you can buy it for less than you will spend modifing the Wichita.  A Wichita in 7br is a pretty good rig, why mess with it?

Near 7-08 specs would be nice as it would fill the space betw my 7-30 and 308 Bellm contenders. What is the max (w/ most optimum weights) for a normal action, and how far above can it go. The pistol is highly customized and well broken in (1000 rounds), though it's a new addition that's on the way. Thanks.

You can go here: http://www.vihtavuori-lapua.com/reloading.asp

and request load data from them. Be careful with this powder (N133) as it is some rather energetic stuff and you can easily produce loads well in excess of what you might expect. But used properly you can get the SDs down in the single digits with very high velocity and great accuracy in most guns. Work up from their minimum loads very carefully and in small increments to find what works in your gun.
