Tommy boy, I think the answer to your queastion would probable a 300 rum or a 338 rum both have a wide range of ammo and both are capable of takeing deer/moose/elk at 400 yds, hope this helps.

All of the rounds listed so far, are high on the recoil end. Do you have experience with such rounds?
Reason I ask, is that flinch is a hard thing to beat. Take a really good look at those high powered rounds, and decide if you *REALLY* need them.
The standard calibers are quite capable of 400 yard shots on deer sized animals, IF you are. That IS a long shot.
Most shots taken on deer and moose are under 100 yards, and very very few are over 200.

Having said that, my personal choice for the above would be the 338WM. Lots of punch, reasonably flat trajectory, punishing, but manageable recoil.   :D

VSSF, first off thats a nice looking buck for sure! Now about that 300 rum have you ever taken a elk with it? if so how did it do? It dident look like you blew a BIG hole in that deer like most say it would, how long of a shot was it and what grain bullit? so you would recoment the gun to other hunters? thanx

Nope, if you can handle regular loads in the 3.5" 12ga  shotgun you should be OK. But, remember in a shotgun flinch goes unnoticed.

Good luck!

Don't overlook the 25-06,a fine 400yd+ round, without the killer kick.

If moose/elk is potentially on the menu, I personally would go with one of the following 4 calibers: 300 Weatherby or 300 Remington Ultra (not short-action) Mag with a 180 or higher grain bullet, 340 Weatherby, or 375 H&H.
If you really need 400 yard reach, leave the 375 H&H off the list as hitting anything past 300 yds would be dicey with this cartridge.
Why the heavies (340 &375) ?
Elk can be extremely hearty and often are not that easy to drop...most authorities say Moose go down easier.
All of these cartridges recoil a HEAP more than a 30/06, so beware; I happen to be fairly insensitive to recoil, but I know others that think a 300 Win Mag kicks like a proverbial mule....most shooters can learn to accurately shoot up to the 375 H&H mag with PRACTICE.
Next year I plan to deer hunt in Michigan with my new CZ550 458 Lott...too much gun ? Yep, but I doubt the deer will get up complainin' that I over-gunned him.
By the way, I would not EVEN CONSIDER using the 25/06 on such large game...the light bullets used in this caliber are just not up to the task & even if they were they make a VERY small hole relative to the size of the game animal (Elk/Moose). The 25/06 is a great DEER cartridge, but would most likely do a great deal more to WOUND rather than drop Elk/Moose.
Craig Boddington does not see any caliber 270 and under as a reasonable selection for game Elk-size & larger.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
