358 STA
« on: January 07, 2005, 05:56:05 PM »
I am considering buying a custom made 358 STA.  It has a Mcmillan stock, Sako action, 24" Lilja barrel, teflon coated, muzzle brake.  What is everyone's opinion of this caliber.  I will be using it for moose/Mtn goat/elk/mule deer and on my next trip to Africa.  My only hold up is taking a chance on not finding ammo readily available if the airlines lose my luggage while traveling. I have been lucky so far and baggage has always showed up where it was supposed to be.

Why not just get a .375 H&H ? Ammo is available everywhere, and it is THE classic African "do it all" caliber. You will also find it alot easier to sell if you ever have to.

In some African countries you will not be allowed to hunt with wildcat cartridges. In other words, the caliber should be marked/written/stamped on rifle barrel, cartridge box, and cartridge head. Make sure you check with your guide before you go there.
And yes, .375 H&H is a good ol' trusted cartridge and there is nothing wrong with it.

I forgot to mention that some countries and/or safari outfits have a minimum bore size requirement of .375 for large game. I don't know about the .358 STA, but if bullet diameter is .358, you may not be allowed to take some of the larger game with it. Before you blow $4000 on a rifle make sure you will be allowed to use it.

I already have a 416 Weatherby so do not need the 375for dangerous game. I am just looking for a medium bore rifle.  It is not a true wildcat since some ammo is loaded for it and any brass I have will have 358 STA stamped on it along with the rifle.

You can also buy correctly stamped brass from Quality Cartridge, if that is a major concern.  I don't think there are any laws against a wildcat in any country, but may have to have correctly stamped brass.

Sounds like a nice rifle.  Since you already have a 416, I can't see any flies on the 358 STA.
