Bigfoot Teritory...
« on: January 31, 2005, 08:16:45 AM »
Since I am still new here, I need to let you know that I have the up-most respect for wildlife. I have never shot an animal just to be shooting it un-like many of the people I know and work with. The Missouri Department of Conservation has done a wonderful job over many years of re-stocking wildlife in my state. If there really is an animal/human creature undiscovered in the woods we should learn about and leave in its habitat undisturbed.

That being said, since humans are the only creature to have an opposing thumb and the ability to do what we do, I refuse to be mauled or killed by any animal re-guardless of species. What firearm or firearms to carry in the woods for wildlife protection is something I am always thinking about.

When all of you head to the woods to just walk around or search for bigfoot, what kind or kinds of firearms do you carry with you? Shotguns, Rifles, Pistols?

Right now my 1300 defender never leaves my side, though it is not perfect for the job. I am considering the "new" Winchester 1300 practical Defender and a Ruger RedHawk and the caliber is yet to be determined.

Has anyone here ever been attacked by any kind wildlife? What kind of wildlife were you attacked by? Were you armed? Did you get a chance to fire?
I love shotguns! :cb2:

I don't live in big bear or mountain lion type country, so the only thing I fear, besides skunks, is the two legged variety.  That does not include Big Foot, which, from most accounts, is shy.  I feel safe carrying no more than a .45 Colt.  If I ever encountered a Big Foot, which I do NOT believe in, I could not shoot it if he was not upon me.

Man you better betcha I've been attacked. There was this really nice looking little redheaded gal and she.... Oh wait.    That's not the kinda wild life you meant was it? Ah but the memory is still so fresh after all these years.  :-D

Other than stinging insects I reckon I've not really been attacked but there was this MONSTER rattlesnake that I sure thought might be attacking me. Full story in the Campfire Tales if Matt ever gets the link to that section working again. Title is something like Rattlesnakes and Yellow Jackets.

The only place you can live not to be in danger of seeing or getting attacked by a mountainlion here is in a city!!!  They seem to be popping up all over the place here now.  The only thing i fear is when it smells my viddles because they smell so good it may drive him nuts to get some!!!!  And i don't share my viddles because if i do he just might move in with me!! kidding  But I can't say its not there or it is yet because i haven't seen it yet.  Heck i can't see it when it is there the dam thing hides so good.  I think its very elusive just like a mountainlion this is why there not seen so easy.  I've seen mountainlion tracks for many years were everyone said there isn't any so wether its there or not or real or not is yet to be proven.   I finally seen mountainlions at my camp and my neighbor sees them too now so you know whats next to see right?  BigBill

What to carry for protection

Red Ryder,

Although I've stood face to face with a Cougar, I'm still convinced that the most dangerous thing I can encounter in the woods will be walking on two legs.  Carry whatever makes you feel comfortable!  If you are proficient with that 1300, it should make a fine defensive arm.

Practice, practice, practice!

I like to carry my Glock 17, stocked with the new cor-bon +p+ barnes X bullets in 9mm.  Nice and lightweight, and 17 rounds readily available.  I too fear the two-legged variety in my woods, and they usually don't travel alone.

For protection in the woods at my camp its nothing short of a 357mag. during the day.  At night its either a 44mag or 45acp for outhouse visits.  My camp rifle is an Egyptian Hakim 8MM  w/25rd mag.  I feel the sks 7.62x39 is too small and will only piss it off.                        BigBill
