Sad to say, but almost ALL new species are described by dead specimens. Ya ever see Audabon's original big book of birds? Those pretty pictures/paintings are of specimens he'd shot.
Without hard evidence, bigfoot believers will be placed in the same catagory as alien abducties: ya wouldn't want your daughter marrying one.
I'm still waiting for someone to invite me out to see a bigfoot personally....

Michbob,
Granted, the world of science wont accept much less than a specimen, alive or dead. Even then, they may declare it a "freak of nature" a one of a kind thing. It "may" take more than one specimen. This has been debated on other boards to no end *sigh*.
There is much evidence to suggest these animals do indeed exist. One of the strongest is track casts with dermil ridges (fingerprints) that are not primate nor human. Yes, you can fake dermil ridge patterns, but not with the detail seen in the casts. Its extremely difficult to do with any level of authenticity. One method would be to make a cast of your foot with a latex material, then soak it in kerosene, which swells the latex, giving you a larger print, with the dermil ridges expanded. But, then it LOOKS like a swollen human print. It rarely expands evenly. The flow patterns and textures are different from a sasquatch.
Belief is something that you are willing to accept as truth. Knowledge is seeing one for yourself. I hope you get to. Its mind blowing !!
