silhouette/ hunting question
« on: December 22, 2004, 09:40:36 AM »
Hi to all, I want to get into silhouette next year with my daughter, but at the same time I don't have a lot of money to spend on a new hobby. Could you reccomend a caliber that would work for silhouette and hunting game up to whitetail. Deer don't get that big here, one field dressed at 120 is big for theses parts. Thanks for your opinions, two bellies.  P.S. I forgot to mention I'm real partial to blackhawks, but any pistola would be considered, thanks again.

Limiting the answer to revolvers only, my favorite is the .41 Magnum.  The .357 can be somewhat undergunned at the ram line (a $1,600 Freedom Arms excepted since you can load it beyond recommended limits).  The .44 Magnum is really more than you need.  Thus, I chose the .41.

That said, I've seen some excellent scores fired with revolvers in .45 Colt.  It's an old timer chambering, but it works!

Best of luck & keep us posted on your decisions.  Merry Christmas.

You did not say if you wanted to shoot big bore or the smaller [and closer] field pistol.  If recoil might be a problem for the daughter you might try the 357 mag.  Many use it for big bore and with reduced loads of the 38 special ilk it would be terrific for training and way more than enough for the small field pistol targets.  One thing you FOR CERTAIN do not want to do is to give the girl a gun that is too powereful and having too much recoil.  This could turn her off to shooting all together.  The best way to train her is with a 22 rimfire and yes, there is tremendous interest in 22 rimfire silhouette.  Hope this helps, we need all the young shooters we can muster.  Regards...g

Hey hammer, thanks for the concern, but really ,my daughter doesn't worry about recoil. She shot her first 22 at age five. She's 13 1/2 now and has shot everything from a 45 auto, 30-06, 50/90 sharps, 12 ga. double barrel, 44 mag, 357, and a few more cap and ball guns. We lived back in the woods most of her life so guns and shooting aren't new to her. She's already decided she want's to use a 357 or 30 carbine in field pistol, standing, open sights. I was really wondering about a pistol for me. I don't know yet if I'll shoot field or big bore or both.  I guess a caliber for FP, BB, and hunting is a pretty tall order huh? Thanks again   :-)

Two Bellies,

If you are looking for a FP/BB/Deer chambering, the .41 Magnum works for all three!

The .357 or 30 Carbine will serve your daughter well in FP for sure.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
