Scope on my .223 G2 Contender carbine
« on: October 06, 2004, 05:25:25 AM »
Just got my G2 with a used .223 barrel. Put my scope on it (a used Bushnell cheapie) and have discovered something odd. I usually get pretty good groups with cheap ammo... 1-2" groups at 100 yards or so. But sometimes I get some of the WILDEST flyers! I mean 10 inches LOW for some reason.
I just brought it home and cleaned the heck out of it, used Sweet's 7.62 and blamed the dog for the odor. Haven't shot it yet. anyone got any opinions re. the flyers being caused by an unclean bore?

The other possibility is, maybe there's  something loose inside the scope, causing it to shift the crosshairs when the scope's been bumped or something. Nothing loose inside, no rattling I can detect.
A good day shooting is when my bullets group better than my brass!

Try another scope to rule out the first one.  It is probably the ammo.  The cheap stuff may not be of the highest quality control.  If you have access to a chronograph, see how fast each shot is going.  if there is a latrge deviation in the speed the bullit is going it will change the point of impact.  If no chrony, just try different prands of ammo until you find one it likes.  my 23 inch .223 barrel loves winchester bulk ammo.  55 grain FMJ, 40 rounds to the box for $7.48 a box.  and it doesnt matter what lot i use i have bought it in 2 different states at different times of the year and it all shot great.

Scope on Contender

Well, I got the scope  problem sorted out. It wasn't the scope atall... got some good ammo and now I'm printing 1 1/2 - 100yard groups! I also got a sling, and use a hasty sling shooting position :sniper: ; this has helped a LOT to steady things down.
All in all, I'm very glad I didn't waste $15 + s&h on an eBay scope!
