Simple Golf Ball Mortar
« on: December 03, 2004, 10:17:55 AM »
I finely got my golf ball mortar built.  I decided on a simple design.  I turned out better than I thought.  It is 1.75 bore for golf balls.  It is a little over sized but with a little wading it should be ok.  The base is oak finished with linseed oil.  I haven’t had a chance to fire it yet but once I have a day with decent weather I'll test it out.  Let me know what you think.

Nice lookin' 'iron!

Suggest one to two .45acp cases of FFFg for 100 to 200 yards range, give or take.

Simple design is GOOD.

Thanks for the compliments.  I think this is going to end up my guinea pig mortar.  I want to try rust bluing it.  I'm not sure if I want to spend the money for the chemicals I might try the old fission way and just let it rust.  I realize that it is a little more complicated than that but not by all that much.  If there is anyone out there with experience rust bluing let me know.  I would also like input on handles.  I have seen a similar mortar with rope handles on each end.  I might do something like that but I'm not sure.  If anyone has some ideas I would like to hear them.
