If you are looking for a gun with 22 hornet ballistics, it is a better choice than the hornet because of the better brass. I personally like it in my 10" barrelled Contender handgun. In a rifle, I'd get a 223 instead because it's more versatile. Starting loads with good accuracy (for varmint hunting) with the 223 are about the same as hornet loads or 221 loads.  Mine was very finicky about loading components. It took several experiments to finally find a combination that got me to 1" groups at 100 yards. 2.5 inch groups were easy. But remember, I'm talking about a handgun.

If you do get one, use IMR 4198 powder to start with.  Also try the Speer TNT bullets.

Also be sure to get one with a 1:10" twist. My barrel is 1:14 and will not stabilize any of the plastic tipped bullets.

I have a Fireball barrel for my TC Encore!
It is 26 inches long and very accurate!  All of the loads that I have tried, shot one inch or better groups!

The Fireball will do almost anything that the .223 Remington will!

My Fireball with it's 26 inch barrel will outdo my Remington M-7 in .223 Remington with equal bullet weights!

Good! I hope it works out very well for you.  I've got quite a bit of ammo made up for mine now, but in my next batch I'm going to try the Nosler 40 grain bullets to get  more velocity. I tried them in 223 loaded to a velocity of about 3100fps. They did great on prairie dogs and should work great from the .221.  It's a nice little cartridge and it will work just fine out to 300 yards if you learn the trajectory.  Most people say it's a 200 yard cartridge, but I beg to differ based on experience.

One of the advantages of the 221 is that you can shoot it all day without cleaning the barrel. I just clean it up after the shoot.
