Yeah, I forgot those pics of the 6-18X were on there. I used those for a review of the Simmons Whitetail Expedition scopes. My normal hunting scope for the Win FWT is a 3-9X Leupold, which is what most of the groups were shot with. I'm sure you LSS is MUCH more accurate, you scared me off. :)

I would also recommend Savage. The 10FP I bought this past spring shot 1/2" 100 yard groups out of the box, a couple of weeks ago I shot a group that was literally one hole. A friend bought a 700 PSS, has been disgusted every time we shot together. He just got it back from the gunsmith, it now shoots as good as my Savage, after getting a new trigger, recrowning, bolt lugs lapped, etc. The only thing done to my Savage, replaced the stock with a Bell & Carlson Duramaxx and bedded the recoil lug. I wouldn't be afraid to shoot my lowly Savage against any factory Remmington. Now, I'm not saying that Remmingtons aren't good rifles, they just don't have the best out of the box performance, IMHO.

Having not fired my new Savage in .270 yet, I can't speak for it's accuracy.  I can say that a Remington 788 was about the most accurate out of the box rifle I've owned.  That 788 was sure one ugly looking rifle, and I've read a few post complaining about the looks and feel of the savage.....compared to the 788 remington, the savage is a beauty queen....I don't think the Savage is a bad looking rifle at all....not a beauty, but not a moped either....(you know, mopeds and fat girls, fun to ride but you don't want your buddies to see you on one).  The savage action is a little stiff, but I don't understand what everyone's complaining about with the synthetic stock, it doesn't seem that bad to me.

If this gun shoots like everyone says a savage does, that remington 700 varmint for $900 I've been lusting after might wind up being 3 savages....or a Savage and a Leupold with a fair amount left over.

I've always said you get what you pay for......Could this Savage be an exception?  Only time will tell....can't wait to get it to the range.......

You'll get no argument from me. My .22-250 VS will put five, let me repeat that, for the Savage and Tikka shooters, FIVE, not three, shots into one hole at 100 yards, the groups can be covered with a dime. Thats about .400 center to center. All the other Remingtons I have owned in the last 30 years, big and small, would shoot 5 shots under an inch with very little home tweaking. I don't expect anything less from my recent  Wallyworld deal, but I know I can always sell it for what I have into it, not always so with a Savage.

Well the only rifle I can say that shot well out of the box is my Ruger 204.
The rest of my rifles I have loaded for since new(I have a bad habit of buying a set of dies, bullets, then brass and tell my wife I need that rifle :-D  because I have everything but the rifle)

But no really I can't knock any of the mentioned brands above because the ones I own/owned are all great shooters. (As far as I'm concerned)

Weatherby Mark V sub 1” at 100'
Rem. 700BDL SS DM-B sub .750” at 100'
Rem 700 BDL sub 1" at 100'
Rem 700 custom sub .500" at 100'
Ruger M77 Target  .375" at 100"
Savage 111 sub 1" at 100'
Western Field 22rimfire ragged hole at 50' sub 1" at 100'

Fact be know the best bolt rifle ever bought was the Western Field 22rimfire. Bought it at Pawn shop for $35. Put Weaver rings with Simmons scope. Then started shooting 50' matches at the local gun club. I took several 2nd places and allot of 3rd, 4th and 5ths. Shot a BR 50 match once and took 26th out of 105 shooters. I took allot of ribbing and shyt stacking because I wasn't shooting a Ruger 10/22 with a Cryogenics dipped barrel or match grade ammo, or a 40x scope. But they soon came to not saying much when I was beating allot of these guys that had $300, $500, $1000 in a 22 rifle.

So to set the record straight any rifle can shoot well no matter the brand. All the brand names are for is: I like Rem, I like Savage, and I like ete. Because at any given time you can get a total piece of shyt from anyone of the major gun makers. It’s a fact of life. If you so happen to get the POS you won't buy said name again or you will run it down.

I've been lucky and only owned a few rifles that shot like shyt and I did all I could do then got rid of them. But I'm talking used rifles not NIB.

I can say I've shot many rifle of most every brand and it all comes down to prefierce. Some shoot good some ok.

If you like a brand and a certain caliber then get it because the rifle you buy might be the next sub 1", .750", .50" grouping rifle you just never know.

Just remember just because its ugly, pretty, cheap, high dollar if you can shoot with it is all that matters.

The two most accurate rifles I've ever shot were a Savage 110 and a Remington 700 ADL.  Neither of these guns had anything special done to them.  The savage in 22-250 would shoot one ragged hole and the ADL would shoot clover leafs--both in three-shot groups.  You can certainly buy nicer rifles but you can't get much more accurate than these two "cheapies".

Too close to call...
Tightest group I ever shot was with a Sako Trgs with Lapua Factory ammo. I have a load in a Ruger #1 in 2506 that will make alot of custom gun owners really pissed. My factory 788 in 22-250 is hard to beat. I guess I need to go to the range more often till one wins... isn't shooting fun.

Out of the box accuracy

I agree with Graybeard. I also have a Rem. LSS mtn. rifle in 7mm/08. It will consistantly shoot Ballistic Tips under a 1/2". I am shooting Accubonds this year and the 1st five groups averaged a 1/2" (not to bad for a hunting rifle). Just a side note: David Tubb won the National Highpower Centerfire match a few years ago with a stock Remington out of the box (trigger was tuned). As far as a Browning A-bolt I haven't seen one yet that would shoot with a Rem. even with that ugly thing on the end. Savages have gotton better but there again what an ugly trigger. Remingtons are super simple to tune right out of the box. Rifle for rifle they are hard to beat. :-D

Who in the heck wants an accurate rifle right out of the box anyway? I want to personally bed the rifle, work up different loads and burn several hundred rounds doing it. My present "truck" rifle is a 223 Remington ADL with the black stock and it is a fine shooter with a bunch of different loads. I went thru a bad scope (new) when I first got it and burned a bunch of rounds to figure that out but it was worth it. I have the trigger and bedding perfected and am considering shortening the barrel from 24 inches to 20 inches but it shoots so good I am afraid to fool with it. I don't know how it would have shot out of the box because of the scope but I earned how it shoots now. OH yeah I vote for Remington but most of my rifles are built on Mauser actions and I never get a box.

I just bought a Savage for my son.  I guess I am going to have a chance to see what one shoots like out of the box.

I notice that a lot of folks want to compare the Savage out of the box with a Remington that has been upgraded with a new trigger and a bunch of other stuff.  What does the Remington 700 shoot like out of the box?  Remember you can buy 2 Savages for the price of one tricked up Remington.  Or maybe one out of the box Remington for one tricked up Savage.
