Bow finish
« on: March 15, 2006, 08:49:58 AM »
I was at the range shooting with some guys and some of them had some nice
custom bow made from the same Bowyer who was also shooting.
As I was looking at the bows I noticed some white marks or residue on the bows, (two of them)I asked about this (to the Bowyer) and he said that it needs a re finish. Is this common? It seems like old Bear or other commercial bows do not need re finishing.

What I am wanting to know is this a bowyer I should stay away from? Or is this something that just happens to all bowyers from time to time?

Thanks for any help.

if it is a glass laminated bow, the glass may be lifting and getting air under it. If not, then I guess it could be a finish but it must be a pretty sad finish to do that. One good finish is referred to as the "Massey finish." It is created by using 2 ton epoxy (about 20 mLs) and adding 80-100 mL of acetone...wipe it over the bow quickly (one or two swipes) with a clean rag (old t-shirt). If you let the acetone evaporate it will get really sticky so don't go over an area you already covered until after it has dried for SEVERAL hours. Do about 4 or 5 coats. Excellent epoxy finish.
