Can Lubalox cause accuracy to head south?
« on: September 13, 2004, 04:15:39 AM »
My primary hunting weapon is a Model 70 Classic Laminate in .270 WSM.  I have been shooting Win PP 150s with great accuracy.  I decided I would try the 130 grain Ballistic Tips just for the heck of it.  Well, the 130s patterned very well; about 6" at 100 yards.  Well phffffft on that.  So I went back to my 150s and the first shot was dead on.  The second shot was 2 inches lower and about 4 inches to the right.  Third shot back on; fourth shot again low and to the right.  What gives?  The only thing I can think of is the Lubalox coating on the 130s.  I'll clean my rifle extremely well this week and try again Saturday.  Anybody have anything like this happen?

I'd check the torque on the screws holding the action to the stock; and the screws that mount the scope, rings, and base(s) to the receiver.    I think the barreled action is loose.

If the action is loose tighten the front screw first, rather firmly, then the rear screw and the thinner screw up front of the trigger guard last.    Most Win's have three screws that I've seen.    The rear screw is not torqued as tightly as is the front screw.    The thin screw is torqued very lightly.

After torquing all three, loosen the front screw and see if the barrel/action rise up out of the stock.    If so, the screws need to all be loosened and the barrel'd action re-set in the stock to make them mate up evenly.    Re-tighten all screws per the instructions above.......and then re-check that assembly by loosening the front screw again.     When you can loosen the front screw without the barrel/action rising up from the stock then all is ok and you tighten the front screw Snuggly.......more than the rear screw.

Check the scope, base, etc.....tighten as needed.....shoot the rifle.

I doubt that Lubalox has anything to do with this.

ps:  with any rifle, with any revolver, I recommend the screws be Loc-Tited to hold their torque.    Some recommend the blue-colored stuff so that dis-assembly is easier later on.

Blessings upon you.

If those 130's were moly coated(a black or blue coating over the bullet) then that may well have been the problem.  Molibdinum dysulphide(sp) is a material that reduces friction but can cause problems if fired over a bore that's not perfectly clean..  and that may now come dearly indeed as you've moly coated over the fouling that was already in the bore..
