Need help with first custom rifle
« on: November 18, 2004, 12:08:56 PM »
I would like to build myself a semi-custom rifle and I wanted some input on which action to use.  I have a Weatherby Mark V sporter in .300 win mag and I have a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06.  I would like to rebarrel and restock one of these actions, but I don't know which is the better choice.  I want the new rifle to be a .300 WBY mag. I know the 700 action is more popular, but is the Mark V of higher quality?
thanks for the advice.

If you need aftermarket stuff for the rifle its hard to beat the Remmy 700. Just look through a Brownells catalog at all the available stuff they carry for that action. Heck you can have your choice of about 20 different recoil lugs alone. Not to mention all of the different types of triggers out there made for that action. Out of the two actions that you have available, hands down I would take the 700. No question.

My $.02,

Jay

Well, the 300 Win mag just might be easier.  I don't know what kind of bottom metal or followers that Weatherby puts on the "standard" magnum rifles, but you could just rechamber the Win Mag.  Case head size should be the same, the Wby rechamber will clean up the Win mag.  Only changes beside the rechamber would be if the magazine box is long enough, bottom metal, and follower.  Just might be that these are already long enough (except for the follower, I doubt it is) and Weatherby just put a spacer in the magazine well for the shorter Win Mag.  I don't know this for a fact, but it is my suspicion.  You can get the follower from Wby, but just giving them a phone call and telling them your cc#.

The stock, bedding, barrel, chambering  and trigger job would be about the same cost using either action only extra cost on using the rem action would be opening the bolt face, extractor maybe a new magazine and follower and that would run about  $250/300 I always figure on the high side of things.   If it was me I'd use the mag action and if money is no object use the rem action.  I also think either rifle would shoot pretty good.  Well good luck.
