making a powder order today
« on: November 12, 2004, 02:20:10 AM »
I am looking at making a powder order today, will probably go ahead and order 10 lbs. (as I am hooked on shooting bowling balls...).  I was looking at ordering from www.powderinc.com.  The powder that I have been shooting is GOEX 1Fg.  They have something new for sale called "Skirmish Powder".  The only information I found on it is, "Can be used in Rifle or Cannon.  Similar granulation to 1F Goex.".  It is only $7.10 per pound versus $9.50 per pound.  I don't really care about accuracy, but do care about safety.

Has anyone used this powder?
Is there any reason NOT to use this powder?
Is there a better buy anywhere?  Total with 10 lbs and shipping is:  $105.00.

Thank ya'll again for your help.

I just looked at the Goex site and did not find any mention of "skirmish powder". Obviously Powder Inc is selling it. I wonder if it might not be a "B" blasting powder given the large difference in price. The "B" powder is made with sodium nitrate instead of potassium nitrate. It is much less costly to make and I used it many years ago for cannons. It is slower burning and won't produce the same pressure as an equivalent amount of potassium nitrate powder. Could it be that Goex is now selling it as a "sporting powder"? Just speculation on my part.

The last time I ordered powder, about 18 months- two years ago, I got it from Coonies in NM. As I recall it was on the order of $6.05 a lb + or -after hazmat and shipping. The Goex site lists all the Master Distirbuters. A few phone calls may be in order prior to making a purchase.

I received my 10 lb order of "skirmish black powder" today.  It doesn't really say who it's made by, but it does say, "This canister contains black powder made from potassium nitrate, sulphur and charcoal."

I'm going to do my best to get home before dark tomorrow and shoot it.  If someone would give me instructions I'd love to post pictures of my mortar...

NitroSteel....I'll bet Double D and/or CatWhisperer will jump in here with some help in posting a picture of that mortar.  DD helped me but I'm still "in the dark" about the posting procedure.  My trying to help would be about like a pig trying to teach a gold fish how to type.  We are anxious to see that mortar picture.  Blaster (Bob in CO)

If you go to the top of the forum you will see two posting on pictures.  One on getting pictures posted into the photo album and another on posting pictures.

Read them and follow the instructions and you should be able to post pictures.

Tell me more about this Skirmish Powder. KNO3 based at seven bucks sounds good. What granulation is it compared to 1,2,3f etc?

The skirmish powder is granulated like 1f.  I shot it about 5 times this afternoon and was very happy with it.  I think it smokes a bit more than the Goex 1f did (and I like the smoke) and as far as I can tell it shoots the balls just as far.

I changed the carriage on my mortar a bit, so I'm not sure if I'm shooting the same angle, but it shot it about as far as I can shoot it before it goes into the woods.

I'll order that powder again without a doubt.  Total cost with shipping was $105 for 10 lbs.
