My Parrot 'Rifle' Rocks!
« on: November 06, 2004, 07:07:20 PM »
I took it out to the range today and it was fun. It took awhile to get it going right. It tended to shoot high. Here's a couple of pictures. I'd post them but they seem to be too big for your format:

It took a lot of attempts to actually catch the flash. Here's two versions of the same picture.

I used lead ball, golf balls, pvc filled with concrete and some cansister.

The carriage behaved perfectly. It rolled well, the longest recoil was about 6 feet. In some pictures it looks muzzle heavy because the trunnions are still tight. It was originally muzzle heavy before I had itr Parrotized. I have to looosen them up so the breeech comes back down.

The bore is a few 100ths under 2". I used loads ranging from 2 ounces to 3 1/2 ounces.

It was a fun day and I'm thrilled with it. It got a lot of attention on the range.

Good pix Steve - thanks for posting them.

Ahhhhh the pleasures of BIG BORE.

Interesting approach to modifying the cannon too.

Post some down-range pix when you get to it.

Looks like your project came out great. It's always a challenge catching the flame from the muzzle. Your "balancing act" with the sleeve seems to have worked just fine.

What plans do you have for sighting?

I have moved all the pictures to http://www.crufflersteve.net/naval.html
Yes, I have my own domain. I'll be expanding these pages over time. I originally had some small storage from my ISP. I was stashing files at several free sites and found that nothing would load. I guess you get what you pay for.

The sleeving worked very well. I'm quite happy with it. The balance is proper. I now need to loosen up the trunnions. When I discovered it was muzzle heavy I made them very tight. In one of the videos, it looks muzzle heavy again. It just happened while sliding back and handling the recoil, the cannon barrel tipped down and the tightness of the trunnion holes kept it there.

One thing that is especially good is that it actually loooks like one of the Antique Ordnance drawings of a Parrot rifle. Originally, the barrel looked like nothing I'd seen.

Will, I am open to suggestions about sighting. My son was getting fairly good at sighting but I'd like something that doesn't spoil the looks. I'm also tapped out so cheap is good.

I've asked my club for permission to do a night firing of blanks just to get some pictures. I hope they say yes.

Steve, the pix are outstanding.  Are the video's up and running yet.  They got to about the point of being downloaded about 1/4 of the way and kinda stalled there.  I gave up, perhaps prematurely.  Blaster (Bob in CO)

Steve go to the top of this  board and look for the posting about our board photo album.

Read over the instructions and send me a picture for posting in our album.  Send a big high resolution just as it comes out of the camera picture.  I will edit it and fit it to our album.

I'll adjust a picture for posting tonight.

Blaster, sorry about the download. I'm not that good at html so it is pretty primitive. I'd like to make it do more showing how far it is loaded. On my IE, it just sits there and suddenly plays. I'll try to make it better. The videos are about 3.5 Meg each so they might be painful on dialup. I'll see what I can do.

I hope my new avatar works out. It is from one frame of the video shrunk to meet the requirements.

If you can't play it, i added some links towards the bottom of the page that allow you to download it:
http://www.crufflersteve.net/videos.html

In windows, right click on the links and you can save the files. They are large so dialup users might want to pass this up.
