In a Civil War type field carriage, if the wheels are 30" diameter, what should be the approximate length of the tail piece?

In an email or PM give me your name and address and I will send you a set plans for a field carriage and you can scale them out from your wheels to get your tailstock measurements.

I tried to send you an email but kept getting error messages.

Hi,Evil Dog.When I was designin' mine.I printed lots of pics of cannons then checked with a protractor the angle of the tailpiece to the ground and found that nearly all were running about 22 1/2 degrees.then I slid a piece of wood  similiar size up or down the axle timber till I got it to the right angle.I guess you'd call that 'backards engineering'.Good luck-hope it helps.Badger Bob

Hey DD..... not to worry, it will probably be atleast a week before I will be able to do anything more on that carriage.  It's real close to dark by the time I get home from work and the carriage is too large to work on in the shed (would never fit through the door).  Pretty much becoming a "fair weather weekend" project.
