What kind of scopemounting system for Encore in 300 mag
« on: November 04, 2004, 07:37:55 AM »
I need to know if I need to get my 300 mag barrel tapped with more holes to put a better than weaver mount and rings on it.  Those 4 little holes so close together scare me a little.    Even the heavy barrelled 300 has a taper so that there is a gap at the front of the weaver base or anyother base.  I've tried leupolds and burrs and it looks to me like the holes should be space out some more.  Anyone with tips and suggestions.

I bought my Encore 300 Win mag with the mount already on it.  I think it is a Redfield mount and steel rings.  Anyway, I put a little blue LOCKTITE on the screws and have fired at least 3 boxes of shells through it and the base and rings are just as tight as when I mounted it.  Good luck!!!

I have a Encore in 300 Win Mag. I use the Warne mounts and rings. I have shot over 100 rounds and it is as good as the day I installed them. I use Warne mounts and rings on all my Encore rifles, muzzleloaders and pistols. I have never had a problem with any of them. On my muzzleloader, I have several hundred round through it and they are holding up great.  :D I don't see the need for tapping more holes in my opinion. :-D

Grumps,

No sir, it has only 2 rings.  I have seen the 3 ring setup in the catalogs and on the net but haven't seen it in the stores yet!!!

midsouth shooter supply has 3 ring redfield mounts. they should be lapped to true them up, and i prefer friction pads stuck to the inside of the rings.
my 16.5" 300mag handgun barrel has a weaver base, and 3 leupold verticle split rings. havn't had it long, but i'm sure it will hold well. the leupold vert split rings are inexpensive at wal-mart.

Tc has a mount that is kinda sorta expensive.  It is a weaver style but all steel.  They are call maxima bases and rings and I wonder if they are any better than the weavers.  I'm not familiar with the warne set up and have never seen one.

Warne make the mounts for T/C. The maxima ring and mounts are the ones that Warne makes. If you get the ones from Warne they are $10.00 cheaper, but the exact same thing. They are better than any weaver bases and rings IMHO.

I used Millet steel weaver style base on my 7mm Mag. barrel along with Warne rings.  Never had any problems with it in rifle form.

I've used quite few different styles and brands over the years, my choices are Talley's, and the Weaver bases and detach. rings(This is what I use on my Encore). IMHO the Weaver mounting system is as strong as any out there and the price is right. IMHO also, the Leupold or Redfield single dovetail style is probably the one type I would avoid if your prone to take your scope on and off more than a couple times. The dovetail will wear with excessive twisting and make holding zero questionable. As far as tapping the barrel for x-tra holes I don't think that it's necessary, I've found it is just fine and plenty strong enough the way it is, at least on my rifle, an Encore or Contender handgun may be a different story though. Just my 2 cents.  Good Shooting!

I'll cast another vote for the Warne Maxima bases and rings.  All of my Encore barrels wear them.  Not a single problem.

Yes, they are heavy.  And yes they are expensive.  But in my opinion they are worth it.

I only have one barrel and I put Warnes on them... everything lined up... it was worth the price just for that.
