Vanguard help please?
« on: October 29, 2004, 11:49:34 AM »
Hey guys  :D
I picked up one of those reduced priced Vanguards a couple of weeks ago and will be setting it up to shoot during our rifle season here soon. Over the next two weeks will clean it real good, add a scope and buy some premium ammo to sight in and hunt with. My question is which would be the best two-piece scope mounts and which are the best rings for this gun? I also don't really want it to cost me an arm and a leg and two toes either.
Anybody with any help?

I just put Weaver bases and rings on my Vanguard.  I got the Leupold Rifleman bases at Wally world when I got the gun.  I think they were about $8.  I already had some Weaver rings that have two top bands for each ring. They seem to be solid.  You can probably get by with low rings if you you use a 40 mm scope and since there is not a back sight on the barrel. Model 700 Rem. bases will fit also.  The gun is heavy to start with, so unless you have a magnum I would use aluminum bases and rings to keep the weight down.  With a Weaver 3 x 9 x 40 scope I'm pushing 9 pounds.   I'm trying to lighten the trigger now.  Good hunting.

same here...remington 700 bases. that 3-9x50 on it makes this thing look and feel like a sniper rig. lol

go with some light stuff so you dont have to haul it around all day.

try the weaver stuff for remington 700.

Rings and bases

You might want to check out the Talley's Lightweight model. Each ring and base are made together and it is a 2 piece set-up. The price runs $39. You'll be hard pressed to find a stronger mount or a lighter mount(about 1.75 ounces per set). I have a set on my 700 custom rifle and can say the quality and workmanship is 1st class all the way. IMO they are the best value in perm. type mounting system on the market. These are about the same system that Talley makes for Ultra Light Arms to sale on their rifles. You can get them at Midway or if they don't have the model for your rifle, you can buy them direct from Talley's. Same price.

I use a 2 piece weaver base and weaver quad rings on my Vanguard.  I've fired about 60 rounds of 270win and haven't had any problems yet.

They're aluminum I don't know how much of a weight difference steel ones would be but the Vanguard is not a light rifle either way.  With a 4-16x40AO it weighs 9.2 pounds.  It took a little getting used to humping it through the mountains yesterday.  On the plus side there is not much recoil for a 270win even with 150 grainers.

Also, I don't think low rings will work for you.  They didn't on my Vanguard.  I had to go with high rings.  The package said good up to 42mm.  Mine is 40mm but the AO ring makes it a bit bigger.  It fits perfect I don't think I could have even used medium rings.  But small rings definitely did not work for me I tried it.

I have a 4-12x40AO Bushnell on my VG 270 Win. and I had to use weaver high extension rings. The one ring is normal and the other is a extension. It diffently is a little heavier than I thought it would be but I can live with that since it was only 250.00

I was lucky, I picked up a set of Nikon "Redfield style" turn in rings and bases on Clearance for $10. They are steel which is a little heavier but they looked nice and what little weight they add to an already heavy gun isn't that noticable. I like the added weight for recoil and easier to steady off of shooting sticks.

Well  Thanks guys - Lots of good responses and now I just have to make a choice and go with it. Rifle season starts here in less than two weeks. Thanks again.  :D
