cement man was right!

As I get older I can see what these gun writers are doing. They are just puppets on a string. Controlled by the gun and ammo manufacters. They want to sell the latest  and most sexy cartridges, to help pay for the investment. It's just like the car market, new is better in their opinon.
I just noticed on the Midway website that even the 7mm-08, they have dropped the 120gr. HP. A great round in my opinion on deer or varmits. But they have the NEW 140gr. Accu-tip for their so called varmit round. Now there is no bullet for 7mm-08 lighter than 140grs. Both my rifles in that caliber shoot 120 and 130gr. bullets best.
A least I handload.  :-)

Why not let the manufacturers make what they want and consumers buy what they want? Let the market determine the value or "necessity" of a cartridge. People who want to dictate what is or isn't valuable are missing the point. Some like the run-of-the-mill cartridges for their availability, others like the uncommon cartridges for their uniqueness. Why can't we all just get along?
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.

Do away with any round that ends with "Magnum".

I reload, for most of my rifles, because I like to shoot them. Some more than others.   Calibers are 30.06, 270, 308, 7mm08, 6.5 x 55, 223, 4mag and .22.  I load and shoot the 223 and 6.5 x 55 rifles the most.  There are faster, more exotic, and exciting calibers but I just don't have a use for them.  The factory ammo or reloads for the above are probably cheaper than most.   I may be cheap, thrifty or old fashioned but I shoot more when I don't think about the cost.  I don't shoot clay pigeons with my turkey gun because it costs $2 every time I pull the trigger. I remember hearing an old saying " Don't bet against the man who has only one gun, -he probably knows how to use it".  My theory is be familiar with your gun, shoot more and shoot better.  When someone gets the itch for one of the hot new calibers, I'm always glad to take their old tack driver off their hands...   Usually for about half what they paid for it.

I guess gunwriters have to earn a living too. What a dumb article. I remember when Boddington was pushing the 8mm Mag. as the wonder caliber. Notice how the 264 win and the 300 savage are always on every gun writers /useless list? Yet I do not think you can find two calibers more suited for their intended purposes. I disagree about about there not being any good factory 264 mag ammo. The old yellow box WW ammo was some of the most accurate ammo ever made. Shot  better then 99% of handloads I have seen in any big game caliber.Only 2900 fps,but what performance on game. My ex kept my 264 and I had 3 boxes of that 140gr and a couple of 100 gr. I hope she enjoys it. Anthony

Writing enables the gun scribes to avoid a real job. Regards, Byron

Hey, these gun writers are just trying to make a living just like the rest of us.  What would you write about month after month.  You keep buying the magazines don't you?  If it is so bad don't buy the magazine.  Just take everything with a grain of salt.  They have an opinion just like the rest of us.  Most of the time I don't agree with them either but if they don't write something who will?

Gun writers help local bussinesses and gun manfacturers

A few weeks or months ago, in one of the better gun magazines appeared a good article about the Belgian made bolt action rifles sold by Sears under the name J C Higgins. I knew about these rifles for a long time, and i noticed that there were several of them in the local pawn shops, nice or excellent condition, priced $200-300. Well, all of them are now sold, and managers tell me that people come in and ask about them.
I believe gun magazines help a lot of the bussinesses involved.

I read that article in one of my gun mags some time ago -- BEFORE I bought a Ruger in .257 Roberts, one of the cartridges he would do away with.  The Ruger has a short action and a 22" barrel, making it a wonderful carry gun.

Its a good thing the market decides, not the rag writers.
