Best choice for laminated stocks???
« on: December 07, 2004, 02:12:23 PM »
Have a Ruger that may be needing a new stock.  I've looked at Boyds JRS (www.boydboys.com) but am open to options.

1.  How much hand work is required with the Boyd's VIP or FInished stocks?

2.  Are there other choices that are better?

I'm likely going with a Boyd Boys laminate JRS for the Mauser rifle I'm currently building.  Since I haven't bought from them yet I can't comment on the quality or amount of work, but one other manufacturer that I looked at and you might find interesting is Richard's Micro-fit Gunstocks.  They have a lot more styles to choose from, though unlike with Boyds you don't get any sort of buttpad included with the stock (with the JRS you get a 1/2" pad, which is fine for my needs).  They also seem to cost more.  Heck I'd love to get one of the Wildcat style stocks they sell I'm just worried about the practicality of it :).

Serengeti Stockworks.  Beautiful look of solid wood stock with the weathering and strength properties of laminate.

They have numerous styles from American Classic, to African Big Bore, to Tactical Response.  Great products from excellent people.

CH,
Although I have never used or owned one, I have had the chance to inspect several Boyd stocks.  The unfinished stocks needed only a light sanding and de-whiskering before applying the finish. The machine work was excellent, very sharp and detailed.
I have a Remington that is an excellent shooter with one of those"recycled plastic"molded stocks.  It's going to get a Boyds laminate stock this Spring.
Best,
