worn colt firing pin
« on: January 18, 2005, 11:13:40 AM »
I have a colt officers model special in 38 special bull barrel that has seen quite a bit of use but still tight. At first my handloads with cci primers would have a few misfires and now factory rounds are failing to go off, this same ammunition that would not fire in colt does fire in s&w and ruger. I think the firing pin is worn down, is there anything I can do to it short of driving 120miles to the nearest gunsmith.

colt misfires

Sorry to hear of your misfire problems.

It's unlikely that the firing pin tip is worn down, unless someone has tampered with it.

Your misfires are more likely caused by either a weak mainspring, bad timing, or  excessive cylinder endshake (excessive headspace).  You can check this by loading primed cases ONLY, snapping them, and checking for primer protrusion and indent.  Compare them with cases snapped in other revolvers.  The difference should be pretty obvious. Excessive headspace and bad timing is common in well used revolvers, but unfortunately requires a good gunsmith to correct.
